NTHUSIM New Release

NTHUSIM is pleased to announce the release of NTHUSIM 2.1.143.

This version is the culmination of a significant development and testing effort to bring you full 32bit and 64bit Windows support. In fact it has been such a big change that it warrants a whole new major version number! So now we have NTHUSIM version 2.0. On the outside it looks very similar to NTHUSIM 1.1, but on the inside it is all shiny and new!

What’s new?

• Windows XP 64bit, Windows Vista 64bit, and Windows 7 64bit support.
• Windows Media Player and Windows Media Center support on Vista and Windows 7.
• Better support for changing primary displays

64-bit Support

You’ve probably heard about this fancy 64bit stuff. You probably also have a lot of questions. What are the advantages to it? Why is it so different? When will 128bit be available?

The common answer to “why 64bit?” is “because you get more than 4gb of memory”. And this is true. Or mostly true. Well, ok, it’s somewhat true. If you don’t really care for technical jargon, then that explanation is enough and you might want to skip to the next section. For those interested, a 32bit number only lets you address up to 4 GB of non-segmented memory. So 32bit Windows can only use 4 GB of memory. Oh no, it’s actually worse! The device drivers map their address space somewhere too, so you actually can only use, uh, a lot less than 4 GB!

64bit means that we can address much more memory (the actual amount depends on the version of windows you have). Problem solved? No. If you run a 32bit application, then you still have a 4 GB memory barrier. So Flight Simulator X, for example doesn’t get to use more than 4 GB. However, it does mean that other applications and systems services can run in separate memory, so you might get some memory improvement.

Why is it so different? Glad you asked. Because you still want to run 32bit applications on a 64bit system. So 64 bit Windows actually has a 32bit Windows running within it to deal with that, called WOW64 (Windows on Windows 64). Windows 64bit is also much stricter with kernel driver signing and that sort of thing, which makes it a little trickier to deal with.

Media Players

We’ve done some more work on compatibility, with a focus on media players. As a result, Windows Media Player should be compatible straight out of the box on a Vista or Windows 7 installation.

On Windows XP Media Center edition, Windows Media Center has always been supported.

Primary Displays

We’ve improved the detection of the correct primary display. This should make it easier to configure in setups that have unusual display numbering.
