A pilot has been dragged from the wreckage of his plane by the driver and passenger of the car he had crashed into.

The single engine AT3 clipped the back of the Volvo as the man struggled to land at North Weald Airfield.

The two people in the car were unhurt and immediately helped the stricken pilot, dragging him clear of the burning wreckage.

Volunteer fire crews were at the airfield for another event and were able to tackle the blaze.

The pilot, who is in his forties was taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow with facial and back injuries and a suspected fractured leg.

Onlookers said the plane appeared to land before immediately taking off again and circling before the failed final attempted landing. It then clipped the back of the car which was leaving the airfield.

It is not yet clear if the crash was due to mechanical failure of pilot error.
