    Thumbs up PMDG 737 aircraft.cfg amends - wow!

    Hey all,

    Following on from my earlier thread complaining about certain elements of the PMDG 737's flight dynamics:-

    - Too much yoke back required to take off (with correct trim settings).

    - Heavy nose on climb out.

    - Pitch sinking on turns.

    - Slow reactions to elevator changes (and Aileron to lesser degree).

    - Slow / ineffective elevator trim.

    Now remember, I'm not a real world pilot and I haven't had the pleasure of flying a real 737. I am basing comparisons on the Level D 767, and the fact that all things being equal, it just feels more responsive, and nice to handle when hand flying.

    So whilst I accept it may not be technically accurate from a 'on the numbers' perspective, I wanted to make the PMDG 737 a little more like the LDS 767 when hand flying.

    I think I achieved this tonight, so wanted to share it with you;

    I made some amendments to the [FLIGHT TUNING] section of all of the PMDG 737 variations (-600 through to -900), as I fly them all.

    I changed the following values:-
    • Elevator Effectiveness = increased from 1.000 to 1.800
    • Aileron Effectiveness = increased form 1.000 to 1.600
    • Elevator Trim Effectiveness = increased from 0.800 to 1.000
    I'm really happy with the effect this has had - it will definately not be for everyone. To me it makes the PMDGs more responsive and easier to hand fly. It certainly doesn't change it into Cessna handling - if anything it makes the handling feel less docile and much more sensitive but in a good way.

    I performed a circuit around EGNT and the phase where things really felt so much better, was on approach. I previously felt the PMDG was too slow in reacting to elevator and trim changes on approach (especially with flaps 30 which is supposed to be standard landing config)... this could make for a rough approach and difficulty staying on the glideslope.

    With the amended flight dynamics, the plane would respond much much quicker to any elevator changes and thus maintaining the vertical profile on approach was much easier and a heck of a lot more fun. With the above amends I honestly think the plane feels more like the LDS 767, which for me is a 100% result - although others may find it too sensitive or twitchy (I honestly don't think it is twitchy). Of course it also depends on your joystick / yoke sensitivity and null zone settings (I have high sensitivity settings and null zones at about 25%).

    Anyway, try it out - I love it, but if you don't, the values are easy changed back.

    That heavy nose on take off....and the porpoising on finals....so annoying.... and the pitch sinking.

    Hey folks,

    On some further testing I noticed that with the settings suggested above, there was some rogue 'bobbing' if the A/P was engaged at too low and altitude (say 5000').

    With some experimentation I have now settled for a these settings:-

    ELEVATOR EFFECTIVENESS = 1.550

    AILERON EFFECTIVENESS = 1.550

    ELEVATOR TRIM EFFECTIVENESS = 1.000 (was 0.800 by default which seems strange).

    .........with these settings, I find the PMDG a real dream on finals, you can precisely and instinctivly guide her right down to the flare and touch with none of those evil porpoising moments! ..... and the A/P seems fine with these settings now too!.
