The first step maybe is to go to XPlane site/forum and make yourself an opinion on the beast!

Best way to find out is to get the FREE demo and fly it for a bit. That will answer many of your questions.

I have had Xplane now for a long time and currently use version 9.22 it is overall the most realistic simulator I have ever used. The ability to build your own real a/c and fly it is amazing. The controls of each a/c are exact to the real one but you must set each a/c up as per real specs. Scenery is awesome but only prob is you got to pay for it to get the really good stuff but its beyond real. You can even add in winter now which is nice. Only complaint I really have is you cant use side view screens you use hat or as I do IR4 tracking which works good. I just wish I could get my PM to jive with it and use my side windows.
