    Tucson Scrapyards

Anyone had any experience getting cockpit sections or even parts from any of the private/commercial scrapyards in Tuscon? The more I look into doing a pit, the more it seems like if I want realism and not to have to design my own shell that having one cut to suit my wants might be the best solution. I ran into the link below and it shows a lot of the yards in Tucson. It looks like National might be a good starting point. I've seen people buy stuff from there on other website posts via google. Any insight on how to best approach this? I'm assuming these people deal in purchases based on scrap metal weight?

Apparenttly removing stuff from there is only with contractor companies I think it is forbidden to even go there... Asked them long time ago about it but maybe things have changed...

Suppose I could always form a sole proprietorship company for this purpose.

Also, I work at a sub-contractor for Boeing as a Catia parts design engineer. Maybe I can buy the cockpit through my work and deal with it personally.

Another option I've explored previously is Desert Air Spares. They deal with simpit builders on a case by case basis. I'm sure they have ties throughout the Tuscon boneyard area. Awhile back they had a 737 cockpit they sold that came from that area.

Just thinking out loud and batting around ideas.

They have a few documented at the private yards, yes. Look through the yard links and they show a database of aircraft many of those private yards have. My interest in Tuscon is mostly commercial cockpit, but if demiling an obsoleted inventory fighter cockpit isn't too destructive I'd humor that too. Heck, they demil static displays and there is a heck of a lot left in them. They seem to mostly be concerned about breaking the wings and back of the demiled aircraft to make sure they never are flown again. That wouldn't effect a garage simpit build much. A simpit doesn't exactly need much of the airframe. Gimme 2 hours with a cement saw and 2 engine lifts and I'm set...lol.

Just a cursory look through the inventories listed I'd think an A-4 or A-7 would be most plausiable/available. Most of those private yards have them. Ofcourse that would probably require government on site inspection to make sure proper demil occured and a signed EUC certificate. That's just a slight bit of red tape. Annoying but not imposable.

I think some of you guys think only military stuff is in Tuscon. There is a ton of commercial stuff too. Too bad I live in Wichita. We only have the building part around here, none of those cool boneyards.

In January I made a trip from Germany to Tucson and there I visited the PIMA Air and Space Museum. Integrated to the museum is a shop where I bought some nice old radios for my home cockpit.
The manager of the shop told me that they also can sell big parts and gave me a business card with a website

    Maybe it's interesting for you.
    Greetings

Boneyard2U sells on eBay. I've purchased from him before. He's a good source for stuff.
