Eric,
the center post cosmetic part is made of styrofoam!! I got a 3" thick sheet of it at Michael's craft store, and using dimensions from Hans over at project777.com I cut it on my radial arm saw. I filled it with Home Depot joint compound, sanded it a couple of times, filled again, etc... then painted it Boeing Brown.
I cut the back out to snugly fit over the metal channel, and blammo, a center post! Everything's at the right angle, the right size, the right color and so I'm happy.
I even made the whiskey compass holder out of styrofoam as part of the surround for the overhead. Just gotta find a 2" ball compass and gouge out the hole and stick it in.

Also, at the FDS forum awhile back, I posted this picture of how I made a separate, free-standing structure to support the 40lbs+ that the overhead weighs. It's mechanically independent of the rest of the sim but connected in with FDT cards.
