Completed Mikes Flightdeck Instrument
I have completed my first Mikes Flightdeck instrument; a directional gyro circa 1959. Modern gyro compasses have a vertical compass rose while old style had a rotating drum for the compass rose. This instrument is controlled by a PIC microcontroller. At power on, it seeks home and allows compass heading adjustment. Success. I am writing a test driver program to test the RS485 communication system. Stay tuned.
Custom designed circuit board mounts all the circuitry in the same size as the instrument (3.25" square). I made a front bezel mold and cast a resin faceplate to increase the realism. I am still deciding how to make the compass degree values which explains the white paper markings on the compass drum. Mike is right, making realistic looking instrument faces is difficult as the origninals were silk screened with paint.

Any chance for larger photos? I'm jealous that you have actually made one, I'm reading his book right now and hope to make some some day soon!

Re: Completed Mikes Flightdeck Instrument
Thanks,
I posted more photos in the General Aviation section of the photo gallery. I think that they are larger but I haven't checked yet. Benn busy building a power supply out of an old ATX pc power supply to power some of the instruments.
