Coventry Airport Closes For Good!
Coventry Airport To Close Immediately
It comes as owners West Midlands International Airport Ltd face a winding-up order at the High Court, amid rumours that the company was spiralling into debt.
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said the Notice to Airmen effectively informed pilots and aircraft that the airport was no longer operational.
The authority added that air traffic control at Coventry was no longer handling aircraft flying over the city and that other airports nearby would take control.
Councillor Ken Taylor, leader of Coventry City Council, said: "This is a real blow to Coventry and I am very disappointed to hear this news.
"I believe that a city like ours should have its own airport, we remain committed to the long-term future of the site as an airport and we will be doing all that we can to support the attempts to secure new ownership and on-going commercial management."
The airport has had an uncertain year: last November Thomsonfly withdrew its use of the landing strips and since then it has only handled freight and business aviation.
The Coventry Aeroplane Club's John Bates, who used the airport, said: "From what I can understand, the company running the airport has gone into administration and flying has been suspended."
The airport was opened in 1936 and was used as an RAF base during the Second World War.

Re: Coventry Airport Closes For Good!
I must admit that a good point about the airport is the friendly staff. They are always polite courteous and well mannered and is a joy to pass through the control. Not a bad airport to travel in and out of.

This is a real shame. I'm from Coventry originally and used to love watching planes fly in and out of Baginton. But there've been developers itching to build houses on the site for years and I guess they've finally won...

Re: Coventry Airport Closes For Good!
Not to worry chaps - Cov has new owner and word is that they should be up and running again soon.
Think they are re-recruiting ATC at the moment.
I have heard the odd A/C flying in/out, presumably for maintenance.
Cheers,
Rob
