Help needed for constructing 777 TQ

Hi guys,

Being new here, I would like to make a 777 TQ, I am totally clueless about making any of the TQ. I have searched the Internet and it came out with a lot of interesting ideas. So I am now narrowed down to the following options:
1.Modify the TQ with a saitek or CH TQ
2.making the TQ totally by myself.
My dad has all the CNC machining stuff for his own use but I am clueless on how to use it.
If I am not wrong, if take option 2, I have to get a joystick controller separately and configure it with FSUIPC.
Could someone advice me?

and join the group you can download a complete Autocad drawing for constructing a 767 throttle quad which is the same as the 777. When you join the group look at jonesthesoftware's photos and you can see a throttle I made using these drawings . It is so much more satisfying building your own and it looks and feels just like the real thing as the dimensions are all taken from a real one. COmponent cost is about 50-60 euros for the mdf, plastic, aluminium, switches etc. You only need a Leo Bodnar card to connect all the pots and you can easily configure it using FSX doesn't need FSUIPC. Only needs some outputs to drive the 5 annunciators, maybe OC card or similar.
I'm actually making a revised version for one of the group at the moment so if you need any help you can contact me. Can't figure out how to insert a photo here.

Hi Geoff, thanks for your reply. I bet the only difference will be the trim levers. Btw, I am totally lost on building the levers and wiring them up. Advise please?

I connected a 10 Kohm slider type potniometer to each lever which is then connected to the Leo Bodnar BU0836 card. Windows/MS FS will recognise this card as a joystick which you can then configure and tune via windows and FS for each lever. you can see this in the AUtocad drawing.

The 767 throttle lever is a bit far off from the 777 throttle quad. Are you sure that the dimensions are the same?

I haven't measured the 777 I was only comparing photos of the 767 and 777 and they certainly look the same. Maybe someone else knows if they are in fact the same

I'm afraid they are definitely not the same! Just look at some pictures on airliners.net and you can see all the differences.

Firstly the 767 is much more angular at the back whereas the 777 is straight across the back. The actual levers themselves are also totally different with the 767 handles facing inwards and the 777 levers facing outwards like a T shape.

I think that the only dimensions the two share will be in terms of the actual footprint. I even think the 767 sits taller from the pedestal than the 777 does. The flap levers and spoilers are also different. The trim levers may be the same.

Austin, PM Westozy in this forum. He built my 777 quad and has created all the CNC files for it. He might help you out but you are going to have to do some serious studying and get some skills if you are to take on the project. If your father has a CNC machine then he might be able to do the cutouts for you. Take a look HERE for details of construction. You'll need to install potentiometers on each lever and connect this up to a joystick controller. I used Leo Bodners BU0836 as suggested already and I highly recommend it for this project.

Your other option is to buy the completed quad from FDS but this will set you back around 6K. :D

Ken: Thanks for your help, I have been reading a lot into aerosim's TQ, but it is too way off my budget(since I'm only a student) needless to say for the FDS one XD. And you mention that I'll have to do a lot of learning for this project to take place, I understand most of it except the wiring which seems complicated. Is there any where I can seek help in this? Btw the TQ in the attachment looks like a 787 :)

Hi Austin, I can understand Gwyn not wanting to part with his files as they are a work of art and all self created. The only ones building a 777 quad on the market that I'm aware of is either Aerosim Solutions or FDS. Other than that you'd need to use a 767 as already suggested. I seem to remember Roberto over at Throttletek had a 767 in design at some time so perhaps contact him.

Below are some sites with heaps of technical info regarding the 777 so you might be able to gather enough information from them to build your own if so inclined? As for the wiring, this is actually the simplest thing to achieve. Get the hardware built and then tackle the wiring. Search the forums for throttle builds for other aircraft and see how the wiring is done along with installing pots and configuring to joystick cards.

As for my T7 quad, yes it looks exactly like a 787 becuase the 87 is basically a grey T7 but without the alternate trim levers. I decided to build my T7 pit in grey as I'm not fond of poo brown :)

Thanks for your reply. However, I know decided to go via the alternative route: using the CH TQ to construct. Now what I need is the levers like flaps, throttle, speedbrake and trim. Any help? Thanks :)
