Re: My hybrid cockpit build
That looks so cool8), I would like to do something along those lines on my Simpit. Looking foreword to the updates. What CAD are you using?

Thanks, I will check it out.

Re: My hybrid cockpit build
What do you mean by "Hybrid cockpit", I just see a bunch of particle board?

"Hybrid - Something of mixed origin or composition." The key work here is in the thread title and it's "build". ;)

Oops, your right! Sorry about that too much wine last night. Great build, looking forward to seeing progress.

Re: My hybrid cockpit build
Your build is looking fantastic Kurby.
Just wish I had the room to build a complete cockpit.
-
Re: My hybrid cockpit build
thats a real nice setup, fine logic woodwork,
the dimensions feel real good.
I'm looking forward to your progress.
-
Re: My hybrid cockpit build
very nice! what did you use to cut the wood? jigsaw?

Yes, thats right, jigsaw and circular saw for the strait bits.

Re: My hybrid cockpit build
Great looking work so far Kurby. Did you develop a template to cut the parts, if so how did you manage to do this with Sketchup? I've played with Sketchup a bit and never did see a way to use it for anything other than working out accurate measurments. Would you be interested in sharing your Sketchup model file? ;)

Shure, i can share my approach to using sketchup.
Here is my first version based on pictures of Ron Rollo's shell design for the lear 45 that i adapted because of space constraints:
http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/4720/finalv21.jpghttp://img340.imageshack.us/img340/9944/finalv25.jpghttp://img340.imageshack.us/img340/9663/finalv27.jpg
Here is the final adapted version rendered:
http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/9291/e135fase8.png
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBVh-OvDuoQ
After that i made templates of all the pieces, arranged them to determine how much MDF boards i would require and printed in 1:1 on A2 paper sheets, joined the different pages to create the master templates then just traced them on the mdf sheets:
http://img192.imageshack.us/img192/2538/e135parts.png
My model is not finished yet, i haven't decided on what embraer model to use or if i will go the 737 way €€€€€€ so the interior is still not developed and have to make a small radius correction to spar number 18.
I can share the pdf file i used to print, with all the pieces in 1:1 scale.

Re: My hybrid cockpit build
Super project and i'm amazed at your drawing skills, how i wished something like this was available for the 737, i would gladly pay money for a template to trace around.
-
Re: My hybrid cockpit build
Hi Kurby,
Just love what u have done, simply amazing.Would appreciate it if i could have the PDF file as u stated.A good place to start.
Thanks

Humm...
Do you mean something like this?? :)

I started on the A320, them moved to the 737, but all of these are very big cockpits :(

No problem, as soon as someone explains me how to upload the file :p
Figured it out, here you go, if you use them please show me the progress!!

Re: My hybrid cockpit build
Here is just a small update on the build, don't have much time but managed to construct the base and start on the side cross members:

Re: My hybrid cockpit build
Great build .. I envy the amount of space you have for your build.
I noticed that you left out (rather left in) the gusset holes in your frame? They could come in handy later when you want to run wire and so on. As you are building the fuselage you may want to do some of the electrical work. As you have the chance now to put in stuff. Lighting and cooling systems (fans). Getting in as much of the electrical as you can while it's still pretty open can save a great many headaches later.
Keep up the great work. It's quite inspirational.

Re: My hybrid cockpit build
The drawing of the 737 is just what i need, did you scale the individual parts for this in 1:1 so i could get it printed and trace around just like your lear?
This is brilliant stuff :p
-
Re: My hybrid cockpit build
Thanks Kurby,
Will definitely show progress and Acknowledge your efforts when i proceed.Wont be for a wee while yet but have all data saved.

Hello,
I can't say for shure if all the parts are like the real ones, but they can be very close, all my sketchup models are full size 1:1, one thing i am certain is that the windows are with the real sizes.

Hello Ronson, you are right, all the gusset holes will be added in a later time, the frame is being test assembled and all parts are screwed to each other so i can disassemble it for gusset placement and apple green painting just like the real deal.

Kurby do you have a simalar print to this for the 737, it would be awesome if you did.

Unfortunately i don't, i never got to that fase of the 737 3d model, since i decided to create a hybrid frame instead, sorry.

Re: My hybrid cockpit build
Kurby,
What are the base and height dimensions of your shell?
Thanks

Hello,
It is aproximately 116cm x 149cm x 162cm W,L,H.

Re: My hybrid cockpit build
Thanks,
The size is great, really keen on doing something similar, may have doa little change but overall its a great help.

Re: My hybrid cockpit build
I made the shell so it could be used for a smaller version of a 737 cockpit because i am still not shure if i will go embraer or boeing.
-
Re: My hybrid cockpit build
Im glad you did that, been looking for a while,my skills do not reach that far.I really appreciate you sharing with us Kurby.
Good luck with your build.

Re: My hybrid cockpit build
Thanks for sharing this file Kurby.
Its close so something I had in mind. I might have to scale it down a little bit but other than that :) Will be a while yet before the build will start.

Re: My hybrid cockpit build
Thanks for sharing the pdf plans Kurby, I've been hoping that someone would develop something exactly like this for awhile. I'll be sure to share a few photos with you as I build. You mentioned that you needed to fix something on panel 18, was this fixed before you uploaded the PDF? If not what was the issue, I'll see if I can try and fix it before I start cutting the parts. Thanks again Kurby, I hope to be making sawdust within the week.

Those plans are pre part 18 fix, basicly the bottom outer part of the curve was to wide, i needed to shave of about 1 cm o so from the midle to the base.

Not to worry Kurby, i think with your pdf you have made a lot of builders very happy, if my mip fitted i would be tempted to build this too, you have created a pro cockpit shell within reach of anyone with a few handtools and a jigsaw or of course a local wood cutting yard to do the work.

No need to thank me, if i could find a little spare time i could easily do the same for the 737 shell, who knows in the future. You can suggest to my cockpit admin to do a pole, if a lot of people wanted the 737 shell like this it would be a great incentive.
I think you could fit a 737 mip just by loosing a bit of the clock plate on both sides, but this is just by rough measurements.

Re: My hybrid cockpit build
I hate to even ask this Kurby but what are the chances that you could put the PDF together so that it prints onto a different paper size. Our printers here at work can't print A2 and even our plotter doesn't seem capable of doing this? All of our printers can do 8.5" X 11" (Letter size) or 8.5" X 14" (Legal) I know this would mean a lot more cutting and taping but that's not a big deal. If this is going to be difficult to do, don't worry about it. I can always try and find a print shop that's capable of printing on A2 paper size. It's probably pretty obvious but I'm really looking forward to putting your plans to use.

I could do this, but it would not do you any good, normal printers don't print the complete page when it is using the full paper size like the pdf, there is a small resize to leave a small bezel all around the page, it needs to be printed in architetural print type of printer, so it is true 1:1, thus the A2 size, all major print shops have these.
-
Re: My hybrid cockpit build
Thanks Kurby, I'll just find a print shop that can print A2, I called one this afternoon and they hadn't even heard of A2 paper size but the phone book is full of them, shouldn't be hard.
