Bought this for peanuts on EBay out of curiosity..
There seems to be an electrical contact (arrow) under each of the 4 top flaps.
Anyone knowing how it works?

Looks like a Transponder Radio Panel..
It certainly looks like a transponder from a boeing.
Buy that from james-buffy by any chance? ;-)
I can't open the photo on my iPhone, but if it's what I think it, it's an old trip encoder.
it may be a Selcal panel from an old boeing

Yes it is a trip encoder/reminder. When used or ordered, it was usually installed above the WX radar on the 727.
I do not know if it was for a rudementary ACARS system or the flight data recorder, or if it was even interconnected to these systems at all. It may have just been a convenience for the crew so they didn't forget their trip number while using the radios.
OK my turn to ask really dumb question.:D
What's the significence of crew knowing their trip number when using the radio? Is the trip number the flight number?

Yes. And if you fly multiple flights in a day it's easy to forget just which one you are.
I used to ferry aircraft to the next airport from our flight school for radio certifications. I'd fly up to five or six aircraft in a day. It's easy to forget which one you're flying without that little plaquard on the dash.
I can also relate to that. We used to fly from Windhoek to Tsumeb to Katima and Victoria Falls with flight number of 821. Then all the way back as 822. If you then ask for startup at Vic Falls for example as 821 you totally confuse ATC.Quote:

Yeah, I have one on mine. Maybe they stopped using the trip reminder after the yoke mounted model was introduced.
That thing is not entirely mechanical..there are four tabs at the top of each wheel and when slided they show a little tongue of brigh metal which makes contact with the tab...very intriguing...
I cleaned out 30 odd years of finger grease (Johson's "Fantastik" works very well)and once repainted I will incorporate it in the pedestal.
possibly sending a signal somewhere else and then to the FDR.
Jack, are the digits only from 0-7 or are they 0-9? [EDIT: Never mind the question, There is a 9 on the photo. Then it is not a transponder dial either]
It's not SELCAL because SELCAL uses alphabetic characters instead of numbers.
Do you have a part number I can look up?
