Re: New member building a Dehavilland Dove.
Hi Geremy! Thanks for your reply ! I must say that sometimes when im trying to build a piece I wished I could buy some bits because it can be quite frustrating at times ;) but when it works its so satisfying and fun ! And sometimes works better than ready to buy bits for my type of aircraft if at all available But a lot of work ! :)

Re: New member building a Dehavilland Dove.
Hello everybody!
This is going to be the last update of this year.
A lot of work has been done this year, and a lot of work still has to be done!
The opencockpits airbus radio has been fitted . I bought this one because one box can do all and i dont have the space for more at this time.
A compartment had to be made to put it in:
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...uh/null-15.jpg
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...uh/null-13.jpg
I needed one because the vor, ndb and dme are now working, together with the compasses!!!
The dme unit is from flightillusion:
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...juh/null-9.jpg
Also the rudder trim handle has been connected on the throttle box and is now working:
Taking the throttlebox out:
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...uh/null-10.jpg
Also had some room for painting so i did that before the throttlebox was placed back again:
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...uh/null-12.jpg
A video of the rudder trim working:
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...2620AED89E.jpg
Most work has gone into getting the compasses , vor and ndb working.
Also the altimeters have been improved. The biggest challenge was to get the right stepper motors that are fast and strong enough or else you cant use the instruments to their full potential. Toghether with the sioc script it was a lot of work.
The making of the steppermotors platform:

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...juh/null-4.jpg
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...uh/null-17.jpg
Connecting the compass wires:
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...uh/null-16.jpg
Installing the unit behind the dash, its getting full......:
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...uh/null-24.jpg
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...uh/null-23.jpg
The hsi and rmi's installed again:
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...uh/null-20.jpg
Tried a panoramic picture with an iphone:
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...uh/null-18.jpg
Here they are:
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...uh/null-19.jpg
And a lot of fine tuning!!!
Some clips of it all working:
The adf and vor needles:

Some testing to see if all the instruments keep up:

A lot of work needs to be done still but thats gonna be done next year!
Happy holidays everyone!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: New member building a Dehavilland Dove.
Nice work again Remco ,, I take my hat off to you. :)
I always get a thrill with your updates as I can relate to what your doing ,, sure beats the B&P&P (Buy & plug & play) brigade.
Keep the updates coming tho ,, their great.

Re: New member building a Dehavilland Dove.
For Some reason I can't upload from my phone to photobucket so I have to wait until I get home this weekend for some movie clip uploads....
-
Re: New member building a Dehavilland Dove.
Yes, please post some updates. Really would love to see that baby fly again.
As has been said numerous times, this is really one of the most amazing cockpit projects.
You mention that it flies and everything works - why do you feel more work needs to be done?
Out of curiosity, what kind of room is the sim built into? Will it be removable if you decide to move some day?
-
Re: New member building a Dehavilland Dove.
Hello Wohnlich !
this afternoon I'll try to upload more ,
Its build in quite a small attic , that's the reason why it's not closed at the back side . It can be dismantled , would take some time to do but is built in a way it can be done with possible moving in the far future in mind .
The reason why I want to do more work is because it's not all finished ,bodywork needs more work and side panels need to be moved. A whiskey compass is waiting installment as well . And I'm not 100 pct happy with the steering feel which is already rebuild .
Ill do my best with a couple of clips !

Re: New member building a Dehavilland Dove.
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps5axuvuby.jpg
Well finally i've been able to upload some stuff!
The reason why i took most of the cockpit apart was because i wanted to improve the steering feel. So i upgraded it from a wooden platform to an aluminium platform with proper ball-baring housing and better more accurate potentiometers and good oil filled extension springs, backed up by normal extension springs. The same was done with the rudders for a more accurate feel.
Old: http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps3dfda344.jpg
New:http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...psb617bd5c.jpg
The next project was wiring, trying to improve on the wiring to make it a bit better , simpler and install an open cockpits relays board for realistic system behavior and to be able to use a actual working icing detector (yes it can be done with an fsuipc offset) and extra marker lights.
Wires: http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...psnqtduzpb.jpg
Clip:
Computer tweaking with the old screens, nl 2000 v4+ and Amsterdam X aerosoft:
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps684cc505.jpg
Also the visual system had to be improved , going from 3x samsung 23 inch to 3x lg 27 inch ( LG IPS277L). They are a lot sharper and have much better viewing angles than my old ones. Also a lot brighter, almost too bright i had to turn them way down but hey have realistic night view now as well. And the bezel is a lot thinner.
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...psc6b28145.jpg
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...psq1dsbvnw.jpg
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...psd963c1a3.jpg
no side windows yet:
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps092d243b.jpg
with side windows night:

night clip:http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...pseeee67fd.jpg
day clip in Greece:
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps96430b12.jpg
The panel itself has been filled with more instruments and blanks plus the ice detector and the carb.heat switches plus extra marker beacon lights.
Panel right side with marker beacons and ice detector panel with carb heat.
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...psee707485.jpg
Putting it back together:
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps06ae6dfd.jpg
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...pse1b33b1b.jpg
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps5f0628df.jpg
night clip instrument panel:
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps00c6b67b.jpg
The other big project as seen above was the exterior, all made from mostly aluminium. That took a long time. Plexiglas windows (side only) have been installed with a white layer. (see above)
At this moment i'm finishing the ovhd panel with the radio , transponder, audio-selection and more circuit breakers in it. And i have changed some plackards on the main instrument panel
So what is the thing now capable of?
The flight model has got accurate weight and balance and fuel usage so you need and can do realistic flight planning.
Its got 2 vhf radios 2 vor's (one is combined with ils) 2dme's and marker lights so cat1 precision and non precision approaches in icing conditions can be done. And it has got realistic single engine properties (not great in this old bird) so that can be trained as well.
Im using nl2000 v4+ scenery so even some vfr flying can be done and the airplane can land on grass runways .
Two vfr nl2000 v4 clips at the dutch coastline near zandvoort:
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...psebea0420.jpg
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps664808db.jpg
What still needs to be done:
Finish exterior,
fine tune
finish ovhd panel
install whiskey compass
P3D V2.0 ?
Better quality clips !
and lots more........

Re: New member building a Dehavilland Dove.
Just tried to make some better quality pictures, I know some are kinda the same as before but because it's almost Christmas I could not stop myself posting them ;)
The overhead panel is finished:
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...psdvhpiz8e.jpg
Some close ups of the overhead, it includes audio control , the radio has been moved here and the transponder ,last but not least fasten seat belts and no smoking lights:

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...psbtstzj2y.jpg

http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...psogxek8bx.jpg
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps0tu3ioie.jpg
The ice detector panel and carb heat :
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps6c9tcr8s.jpg
The turn and slip indicator needs red lights in stead of white.
And some one more panel overview ones:
Left panel

right panel
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...pskpef4cop.jpg

Happy holidays everybody!!!
Ill make some more detailed movies in the future.
request can be done :)

Re: New member building a Dehavilland Dove.
Hi Daniel!
if your ever in the neighborhood your more then Welkom to try it out !
ive tried to build it as close to (with some sentimental exceptions and lack of parts) a dove as I can but tips on the flight model are more than welkom and if you know a place to get spare parts please say so.
If you want to put pics etc on your Facebook go ahead, if you need stuff let me know Altough it will be after the 5th of January because I'm in the middle of a conversion course (work)
best Regards ,
Remco

Re: New member building a Dehavilland Dove.
Hi everybody !
Here a small update , not much has been changed just some fine tuning and a lot of computer crashes with the ntdll.dll file ..... I think it was some add on scenery but I'm not sure .....
More work on the way :)

Re: New member building a Dehavilland Dove.
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...psm2tzqbyl.jpg
Almost 9 months on and still having some instability issues....
I tried to solve them by adding a second computer to run the instruments and instructor station software:
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...pspnlwzqmq.jpg
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...psv4jdiics.jpg
But this only fixed some issues.... the ntll.dll error still existed , until i de-rated the processor speed from 4.6 to 4.3 ghz eventhough the system was stable with processor/memory testing. That fixed most of my problems and the system is stable enough now.
The next thing i did this summer was adding map cases:
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...psnh2afzej.jpg
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...psmroyp9hx.jpg
And also the rudder locking mechanism (red bar on the LH side)
We have had some utility lights laying around for years and even-though i'm missing the original brackets i decided it was time to install them:
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...ps4fdrbbz1.jpg
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...psleoerdup.jpg
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...psnan6dbph.jpg
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...psp6kzuuew.jpg
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...psvkacmqeu.jpg
A little clip of what it looks like at night:
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...psupa9ob3u.mp4
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...pstttordt5.jpg
And some plackards that were laying around have been put on the panel to see if the location is ok for further permanent fixing:
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...psjqahapzm.jpg
A lot more work needs to be done on the side panel location, whiskey compass, converting everything to prepar 3d etc etc etc..... :)

Re: New member building a Dehavilland Dove.
You have done a crazy good job, congratulations.
-
Re: New member building a Dehavilland Dove.
Thank you Shawn!
Still a lot of work to do though :)

Re: New member building a Dehavilland Dove.
Hello!
its been a while and some things have changed,
first of of all the steering feel has been improved a bit more , not as good as I want but workable.
the big thing I've been trying to do is convert everything to p3d v2.4 , 2.5 in a few weeks .
First I upgade my p3d to a bigger ssd drive.
ive been having a lot of issues so far , also stability issues. I thought it was due to a relative old gtx 680 . After upgrading to a 4gb gtx 980 I must say I'm very happy with the visual , it's a big improvement .
stability issues not gone though . After having boot errors I changed my memory , it was 2133 MHz memory but I clould only run it at 1866 in the end.
luckely I could change it under warranty. The system is stable now!
further tweaking required though.....
Also some more changes to some panels and bodywork coming up..
