Basically all the mechanism is outside the compass above the shelf. I just have a long rod going all the way thru that spins the indicator. Wasn't too complicated to open up the compass and drain the water out. The original indicator just floated on the water, now it's held by the rod.

Here is a pic of the mechanism, a simple stepper motor with a few gears from rc cars I got at the hobby shop.

Thanks for sharing. Looks pretty cool. I might be able to run a cable from the back of my MIP to the compass maybe bicycle cable, that will spin inside it's shielding? I'll need to look into a bit more but as I would like to put my compass on the windshield brace I'll need to hide the mechanism some how.

You mentioned RC Cars (gears) well I just found out there are flex drive cables for RC boats that could work. hehe. I could run that cable up the inside of the windshield brace with very little deflection. I may try what Simkits did though and move a magnet that in turn moves the compass. This will still let the compass have that dampening effect and I don't have to take it apart. I plan on putting in Magnetic Deviation Card/Holder so that can hide the magnet..

Very innovative idea Fabian! I like that, i may consider doing that with my own! Did you program the servo/motor with SIOC?

thank you guys! Yeah I use SIOC with the opencockpits stepper card. Stepper motor works great for the contineous rotation.
