OK, I give. I've been trying to find out what the different LearJet exterior lights are and when they are used. On the light panel there are Nav, BCN, Strobe, Logo, Taxi, Landing, and Recog. I can picture all but those recog lights...in my search there was even one LearJet that boasted dual recog lights.

Help, this is driving crazy.

Thanks,

Nav Lights ar your Red/Green wing lights etc.

Your recognition lights are turned on and off whenever you are below 10,000 ASL. These lights are used by other aircraft to identify you in the dark.. ie. (Join the ILS 2-66 #2 behind the 7-6) As a pilot in the dark you can identify the 767 by its Recognition lights.

Hope that helps.

If i understand you correctly unlike the red and green nav lights the recog lights are also in the wing tips but face rearward. That means they would need to be white in color. So the wings of a fully tricked out plane could have three lights in the wing tips...red or green nav light observable from the front...a white strobe which could be seen from anywhere on the side...and a white recog light that could only be seen from the rear.

Did I get it right or does this need further refinement?

I was looking at some 737 panels and I didn't find that switch...Maybe the recog lights just come on automatically with the nav lights or something?

Such confusion!

Your partially correct.

Some aircraft do not have recognition lights, because they can be identified by the placement of their landing lights or such. The recognition lights are red or white in color, and can be located in different places around the aircraft.

Most commonly they are the white/red strobes locates in and around the red and green light in the wings or tail, and on the fuse.

and allow you to see the aricraft clearly from almost any angle.

Here is a great article regarding this type of system.
