Hi all,
i have a small problem with my backlighting that has got me puzzled.
Upgraded my old 200w pc power to 650W. Now i have wired my overhead (5V) in2 2 sections, when i connect either 1 up they work but when both are connected at same time the power cuts off?????

I even put them on 2 seperate connections from the power & it still cut out.

I never had this problem with the old 200w .

Any ideas?

Thanks
Michael

check how many amps each BL section takes on it's own then add 2 together and check the total amps against the 5 volt rating of the power supply.Normally there is a rating plate on the side which says how many amps for the 5 volt the 12 volt and the 3.3 volt sections.
PC power supply ratings are for the TOTAL power that it can supply and this total is spread over the 12 volt and the 5 volt combined so you may be overloading the 5 volt part. Another thing to check is have you connected all of the 5 volt outputs from the PC power supply together to parallel them? E.g red and purple wires together as these are all 5 volt.

Thanks for that Geoff, did check all wiring still no go so i went back to the old power unit & it all works !!!

Go figure, the specs for the old power unit was 5v - 20amps the new unit 5v - 28 amps
