View Full Version : Great FPV (First Person View) videos

FPV is getting more and more popular in the RC world. The videos made from FPV flights are just amazing. It's almost like being inside the RC aircraft.

For those not familiar with FPV:

The RC plane is equipped with an on-board camera, which sends a video stream via on-board transmitter to the ground. The pilot that is flying the RC plane wears video goggles and actually sees what the on-board camera is seeing in real time. On-board camera can be panned via RC transmitter channels or pilot head movement detector. Due to the video link, the pilot does not need to have direct visual contact with the RC plane. But piloting FPV takes skill, and if you're not careful, you easily get lost.

If you think of it, it has a lot of similarities with Flight simulation. Imagine what it would be if you use this system in combination with a flight simulator cockpit.

Below some links that give a good impression of what FPV can do. Enjoy!

I saw a youtube video about a week ago where the guys rc plane was an F-16. Looked like a blast. His attention to detail was outstanding... he built a tiny little instrument panel, and used a ken doll inside the cockpit. So what he saw in his helmet cam was "his" arms extending to the throttle and stick with a MIP "on screen", including an actual working altimeter. Even had launchable missiles (he said he's lost a few of those) and light up after burners. Very nicely done, and looked like a blast to fly.

Thanks Roland,
Love the HD resolution and wouldnt mind trying it. Have had cameras fitted to my plane but not like this. Be great fun to try.

That F-16 setup really sounded awsome. I guess this is the video you are referring to?

This one shows some cool "missile" launches
It also shows that there are very sophisticated FPV + OSD versions, which show GPS and battery condition info.

I agree, when you watch these video's it really tempting to try this out.

Yep, that's the one with the F-16. The video was made with (Kenny Loggins?) Danger Zone, from the movie, Top Gun... but everybody knows that Top Gun featured F-14s, not F-16s. Perhaps a better selection would have been Dio or Queen from the Iron Eagle soundtrack - now there was a "good" F-16 movie. (good from a standpoint of F-16 footage, not necessarily plot line, lol)

The unfortunate downside from the technology improvements with RC planes and the FPV usage is that federal agencies are going to start getting more heavy handed. Just imagine the security implications that these "drones" will soon be scrutinized for.
