Thanks and wish you the same.

Also thanks to all the members of the MyCockpit community, it because of your support we have been able to achieve great heights in 2010, we have shown considerable improvement in terms of membership growth and also participation as compared to prior years and this would not have been possible without your support.

Once again thank you and Happy New Year to each of you and your families.

Regards
Vybhav

To my Dutch friends, I want to share with you. I know on Oudjaar it's customarily to have Oliebollen, Appelflappen (I remember calling it something else, can't think of it).

My wife and I make our Oliebollen and Appelflappen on Nieuwjaarsdag. Still an old recipe handed down from my grandmother. :) :) :) :)

Advocaat was one of the drinks and don't remember the name of the drink with raisins in it, that was customary on Oudjar. Perhaps you can help me remember?

Again, Happy New Year!!!

Happy new year to all MC members!
Time to review the past year. This is my view:
Over the years, this site has become much more than a mere forum about home cockpit building. The people forming this community - and also those standing behind this organisation - are people, who undertake continuous efforts to keep this site at a very high level of quality, technically and also with reference to the contents of these pages. These people merge their expertise in the various fields of our hobby right here with passion. At the same time, there is not a single question that is too stupid to ask. Help is always just around the corner and given with respect to each other. The etiquette of this forum is by far superior to so many others. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all those contributing to this highly specialised hobby forum and especially the staff making all this possible. Wish you all the best for 2011!

Chris

Matt,

As one of your Dutch friends let me answer the questions.

Appelflappen are also called "appelbeignets" (pronounce: beeaa's). Actually it is not the same. An appelflap traditionally is a slice of apple (goudreinet: golden rennet), dipped in sugar and cinamon, and then covered in a thin batter and deep fryed in salad oil or sunflower oil. And there remains a hole in the middle (a bit like a donut; it is said that the donut originates from the oliebollen brought to America by the Pilgrim fathers who put the dough on a stick).
A beignet is apple in dough with almond paste. After deep frying it, it is dipped in sugar and cinamon. There is no hole and the sugar is on the outside.

Brandy and raisins is called "boerenjongens" ("farm boys"). Apricots with brandy are called "boerenmeisjes" (yes you guessed that: farm girls).

Advocaat is brandy with eggs (and served with whipped cream).

Cheers,

JWS

Fantastic JWS :)

I knew how to pronounce appelbeignets, but would not be able to spell it, thank you. According to your recipe, we made appelflap yesterday. AAahhhhh, berenjongens, that rings a bell, thank you. :) Does the Brandy and raisins have to set for a certain time before eating/drinking?

Thanks so much Jan Willem :)

Ah Matt, it's "boerenjomgens" not "berenjongens".

Yes it has to be set but I don't know for how long. In the old days it was made by the farmers themselves. Like moonshining. Today you just buy it in the store.
