What to look for in a rotary switch

Looking to add a rotary switch to my overhead for engine start. Its three positions so what do I get, 1 pole 3 positions 2 poles 3poles???? shorting - non shorting. I assume non shorting but as far as poles does it matter as long as it has 3 positions??
