View Full Version : Which Anti Virus ?

As my yearly subscription to McAfee is getting close to renewal time I was wondering which virus protection other builders are using. Other forums seem to suggest that some anti virus programmes are a big drain on cpu resources. What are your experiences/views with either freeware or payware types. I know the best solution is not to have the internet connected to flightsim PC but that is not an option for me just yet.

I've used Kaspersky and Iolo. Both stopped viruses and other types of attacks and I've run FS9 with both. Very little drain from either.

Thanks guys. This thread had 7 replies before yesterdays problems on the site. I have now removed McAfee and have downloaded the free AVG (Avast). Seems to be working very well so far.

Hi Bill,
AVG & Avast are 2 different products - out of curiosity which did you decide to try?
Cheers

And beware if I remember correctly one or the other generates problems when flying with IVAO.

Well I work as a network admin for a big company here in NY, and I ousted McAfee and replaced everything with Kaspersky, and this is after I've been using it at home for a long long time. It is the absolute best Antivirus/Antispyware I've have ever used.

Oops. This is what happens when you rush and don't read. Well I have installed Avast and as I said so far things are fine but it is just over a day. I don't fly online so hopefully I won't have any problems. Thanks everyone for the info.Have been trying to reply for several hours now but site keeps dropping connection

Bill,
Seeing as Avast is free you havent lost anything by trying it.
I've been using it and not hit any problems - if I do it can be just un-installed.
Cheers

I too am using Avast. I used AVG for a long time but with every update they seemed to become more and more bloat ware. I switched to Avast a number of months ago and so far no problems and I am very happy.

I should mention that I've ran Avast on many PCs with many different pc configurations and did not have a problem with it, does not conflict with anything and not a resource killer. However I must say I didnt have such results with NOD32, to be fair its extremely powerful however it caused close to 50 pc's to hang randomly while running with certain other software and certain different configurations. But I must mention all these tests I performed at work, on various workstation PC not gaming machines or FS machines, so as we all know no one PC is alike therefore you must see for your self I think.

Ok maybe getting through now.I have typed several replies only to lose connection to this site whilst submitting the reply.I wonder is this a coincidence as I have also been having problems with my CP Flight MCP disconnecting all afternoon. I have been trying to assign LEDs using FS2Phidget and after many failed attempts I may have scrambled the computer! Maybe coincidence, maybe Avast only time will tell. All other FlightSim sites are working fine.

MCP was having some work done on this site the last couple of days.
There were some problems encountered in the last upgrade and its taken a couple of days to get it all straightened out.
If you are still having trouble with losing connection, then remove Avast and try again.

Not sure but the site has been bouncing all day today. It's up for an hour, down for one, back and forth all day long.
