Hi all,

I have managed to source a small number of Alps Dual Concentric Rotary Encoders (with push switch) and will be putting them on Ebay in the next few days if anyone is interested. I will try and source a few more as I know these a difficult to find. Not sure about the price yet but it should be around 10 Euros + P&P each. I am also trying to source the dual knobs so if anyone knows where I can get them let me know.

Once I have listed them on Ebay, I will put the link in this thread.

John

The encoder is shown in picture 13 on page 189 of this catalog: http://www3.alps.com/WebObjects/catalog.woa/E/PDF/Switch/Encoder/EC11/EC11.PDF

Hi Guys,

Mike yes these are the ones.

DaveC3, 10 Euros was just a guess. However, these are hard to get in Europe. Ordering from Onlinecomponent is OK, but they are killing us on the shipping to UK. Plus you have Customs Duty to pay on top of that which is why I have tried to source them in EU.

I haven't confirmed the price in UK yet but I should find out this week.

John

OnlineComponents force international buyers to buy US$100-00. If you just want 5 encoders this is a problem. Then the freight charges is a killing just as BoeingNG mentioned. I guess if you are in the USA it is fine to buy from them.

I bought 5 encoders from http://www.simparts.de for EUR20-00 each. They sell knobs for dual encoders.

JackPilot,
These are the same ones GoFlight uses, except these also have a button feature.

I just bought 5 of them from Online Components. It was very reasonable considering I live in Hawaii. Very nice units.

Hi all,

Just a quick update.

I had a meeting with the Pan Euro distributer of these encoders and there is a min order level of 700 units @ 4.35 GBP each. I also got a quote for up to 50 and they want 13.50 GBP each. So I suspect this is going to be a no go from these guys unless I order 700 (no chance of that)

John

Hmmm....maybe if someone in the US needed some they could order enough for some in the UK and then have the folks in the UK pay the post over the pond?

Tomlin,

You have given me an idea. I have 3 guys that work for me in the US so I will ask them if they will try and get some over via the internal mail.

Good thinking. (not sure why I didn't think of that before to be honest. This cockpit project must be getting to me :-))

John

All,

I have managed to negotiate a small order with the distributers for these encoders. However, prices are still a bit high and this is only a one off deal with them. I have priced them at GBP6.99 to cover the cost of the items and the additional ebay and paypal charges. I am not making any money out of this I have done this to fill a gap in the European requirements for us Cockpit Builders.

Are these encoders ok to work directly on the Opencockpits mastercard - if so then I will buy a few from you

I read this thread the other night... seems someone had issues with this encoder with OCware.

if its the same as the one Goflight sells (and ive been told it is), then it works perfectly with the encoder card from OC

Simunut and Stef

Thankx. I think I may give this a miss as the encoders need to work directly on the OC mastercard, not their encoder card. I am currently using shaftless Bourn encoders and fabricating double concentric units - thought the Alps units could save some effort.

If you're still looking for your encoders, here in Switzerland is a company named Conrad Electronics and they sell Alps encoders as well to a very affordable price and the shipping charges aren't expensive.
Here's the link: www.conrad.com choose a country and look for "rotary encoder"
in the search engine.
Hope this helps

Okay, so I see these are much cheaper than the GF166 RMK dual rotary encoder, so Im planning on just ordering the card for $65 plus this dual R.E. from online components. However, where do I get the knobs from that I need that will fit?

Also, I assume as somone mentioned before, these will work fine with GF products?

I guess you are paying a bit for the PCB attached to the RE from GF.

Does anyone have a link to where you find the knobs for the Dual Rotary Encoder?

You can order a set from GoFlight since it is the same encoder they use.

Eric, PM and we can talk, I have about 100 knobs esp for the ALPS Dual Concentric Encoder. I have both dark grey, light grey and white if you wish to paint them. They are the exactly like the ones in the real boeing aircraft. I have too many at the moment so all you have to do is pay for shipping.

That is great Padraig. Can I PM as well for some clear knobs? I live in Italy. Obviously I would pay for shipping and your disturb.

Thanks.

Sorry, I made a mistake, I do not have the clear in the dual concentric knobs. Just the light grey.

I know it has been a while since this post but any chance you still have any of these available?

Leo Bodnar has some nice knob sets for them. This might work or give you some reference.

I found dual concentric encoders on propwashsim (dot) com . $7.00 per encoder and includes the knob and pc board. They are in the USA and have a good rating on tindie.
