View Full Version : My ongoing CNC router project - (work area: 2700x1700x200mm)

Hello.
As I have promised, I will describe CNC project I am working on right now.

From the beginning when I wanted to build a CNC router I thought, 1200x600x100 in work area is good enought, but the MDF sheets have 2400x1200 mm. So why build a machine that I have to cut MDF sheets to fit them on router table?

So I left this thought be in my head and started to buy electronics and motors.

I got this:


4x Nema 34 8,2Nm stepper motor driver (6A)
4x M880 stepper motor driver controller (7,2A max 80V)
1x mother board
1x "big ***" PSU. 48V 24A constant load with 6 stepper outputs
about 550kg of steel
25mm shafts (2x 3000mm, 2x 2000mm, 2x 500mm)
8x 25mm open ball bushing
4x 25mm closed ball bushing
10m of 25mm shaft support
3x 25teeth 25mm pulleys
12m 25mm reinforced belt
1x 14x3mm screw with mutter
1x 12Nm coupling
1x Kress 1050W 230V router motor


I think it is all the parts.
Under welding my router table looked like this: cnc_table.jpg

The router table I build in Poland as steel is much cheaper there then in Norway. So right now I am waiting for steel to come from Poland.

My gentry will look like this: cnc_gentry.gif

The table is build from 120x80x5mm steel profile, and the gentry is build from 2 of those profiles welded together.

Have you decided on what software to use? I have researched a CNC project a while back. A friend of mine build a small one http://www.hobbycnc.com/ or http://www.crankorgan.com/ I was looking at building circuit boards for the components and back lighting.

I looked and some of these for the software.

I am going to use Mach 3 as I am most familiar with it.

You can either use a PCB-CAD software or regular CAD software to draw a PCD drawing then use engraving capability of a CNC router.

Feel free to ask if you need help about CNC building.

Hi there, I said to myself. I believe I've seen these pictures of this CNC-project before somewhere, and yes I have. Well, I am waiting with eager for this machine to be in operating status as I hope to be able to forward an order for my King Air panels. I wish you best of luck and hopefully a prosperous project.

Looking forward to see more of your CNC-progress. And the sweet items you can make with this great machine:)

But I guess it will be "bus-panels" only from your CNC-machine;), and no "real aircraft (Boeing)" replicas:D

I am going to make Airbus panels for me yes, but you know, there are to types of airplanes. OLD and NEW airbus. :D

I thought about Boeing but Airbus is my passion, and I like them very mutch.

I will post more info as soon I start on this project after new year.

I have seen those machines.
I also got a few plans fro CNC machines in MDF.

I see on this picture a home made solution for drive shaft +++.

Linear driving shaft with bearings are not so expensive, buying them will give a much more precision.

Remember one thing guys if you see my project.
My step motors, step drivers and PSU are much more powerful then it is required.

With my setup also: 4motors, 2 on X, 1 on Y and 1 on Z axis, and machine dimensions, you will be doing just fine with 3Nm motors, much cheaper drivers (up to 4,2A), and smaller PSU.

But as I said, do you want to build a good cnc machine, invest money in linear bearings (shaft or rails,it is worth it.
