LCD won`t display proper letters or figures.

Hello, I`m still having trouble with LCDs. Checked all I can, tried new setups, different Arduinos, all display strange letters and numbers. I have even reinstalled the IDE, with no change. Is there a bug or virus out there, or is this a bad block.
I have gone right back to basics Hello World with count on line 1, still the same, program runs but strange letters and numbers, some thing like, 1,2,3,<,=,>,?.
    Any ideas, I.A.Long.

Are you using 1602's, and if so, are they equipped with I2C backpacks?

Hello, I`m using 1602s with out I2Cs, have some on order, not hear yet. I know contacts are a problem, so have tried setups but no change.
Thanks for the reply, Ivor Long.

I used 1602's with I2C backpacks because only 2 + 2 = 4 connections are required per display, and I have successfully cascaded 5 such units, as discussed in this thread: http://forum.arduino.cc/index.php?topic=291533.0

Hi Tomahawk66, I will use I2Cs when I get them, but my problem is simply getting a true display or a readable one, I did have three LCDs running at one point, at this point can`t get one to run with readable letters and numbers. Will look up thread you sent, Thanks for the help, Ivor.
