Speed Tape "nervous" + drifting LOC on final in FSX

    Hi again,

during my transition from FS9 to FSX I observed the following when flying in FSX:

    - Speed tape is quite nervous during climb (always going up and down up to 10 knots IAS)
    - When flying CRZLVL 3000 feet and FCU speed locked to 250 knots, speed in fact goes always up to 260 knots, sometimes 270
    - When being on final LOC is captured fine, but below approx 800 feet above ground, A/C is very slowly drifting off course, LOC symbol drifting out of the center area, always a manual correction is necessary, no autoland possible. FMA still says "LOC" captured during drifting.

This all happens only when there is also some wind (not much, just 5 knots or so). I made a test flight with manuel weather setting and wind speed set to zero, all is fine. Also on FS9, all is fine.

Anyone an idea what might be wrong in my config still?

    Thanks
    Stefan

Re: Speed Tape "nervous" + drifting LOC on final in FSX

    Hi,

after a lot more tests it looks as if my problem has something to do with FSGRW. If I only use FS default weather (also with winds), I am not having any problem.

I tested with FSGRW and both windsmoothing options in FSUIPC - it does not make a change. Switching off windsmoothing is strongly recommended by FSGRW, but the problems persist.

I can see that the wind direction and speed goes up and down around 2 degress + knots about 5 times per second (as seen on the ND). Also having windshear warning on every approach. Is this normal? Anyone else operating FSX together with FSGRW?

    Thanks
    Stefan

Yes mate - same here and do use FSGRW

I may try opus again and see if the problem is there too

    Ill report back

great, thanks Doug. So I know I am not the only one

The crazy thing is that I do not have any problems within FS9, only in FSX.

Ah! I am using P3D 2.2 so the results will be interesting indeed!

Re: Speed Tape "nervous" + drifting LOC on final in FSX

    Hi Stefan,

Well, tonights flights (x2) i did not use FSGRW but instead i used OPUS weather engine...

I can say that there was absolutely NO nervousness in the speed tape... stuck to the numbers as it should with no fluctuations at all... the weather was bad here in New Zealand so expected some variations but it kept very calm... on both flights...

No continuous windshear callouts all the time on final either!

I can say then from my experiment that FSGRW does not seem to play well with the software but OPUS does... I will be sticking with OPUS for now as it is stable (the cloud popping at times sucks but generally it is good)

    Hope that helps Stefan!

    Cheers

    Doug

Re: Speed Tape "nervous" + drifting LOC on final in FSX

Thanks for your test - that's what my impression was as well: FSGRW seems to be the problem in this case. Have you been flying with FSGRW on an altitude higher than 10000 feet? I observed that the problem seems to disappear if you climb above 10000 feet. I think the people from FSGRW have integrated some kind of wind smoothing if the altitude is above 10000 ft.

    Regards
    Stefan

Re: Speed Tape "nervous" + drifting LOC on final in FSX

I have just picked up again a thread on the FSGRW forum which might be related to the problem we experience:

    http://fsgrw.freeforums.org/wind-var...-ias-t213.html

I am not sure if I have tried whether this setting in FSGRW does make any change. I think I have tried. But to be sure I will give it another try. Maybe you can check as well what your setting is?

    Regards
    Stefan

Re: Speed Tape "nervous" + drifting LOC on final in FSX

    Hi Stefan,

I will turn the natural wind movement setting and see if it makes a difference... i didn't notice the movement unduly above 10K but certainly when trying to land with constant windshares!

Will try this tongiht and let you know... I do like the simplicity of FSGRW rather than opus but will use whichever is the more stable..

    Ciao

    Doug

Re: Speed Tape "nervous" + drifting LOC on final in FSX

    Hi Stefan,

Did the test with FSGRW and above 10K no problem... as soon as i decend and approach on final get the vacillating speed tape along with windshear message all the time... this is with or without the natural wind movement ticked and unticked...

I will be sticking with OPUS for now until this gets sorted...

    Hope that helps

    Doug
