Re: 3 or 4 or 5 axis CNC machine ?

Hello Qwseyvnd - nice name btw....

Are you still in the decision loop - I though you already had ordered
your 5 axis CNC back in 2012

What you need is a 3 axis CNC or a CNC vertical mill or both.
Add an Index wheel (makes it actually a 4 axis CNC).
Then you need a steady Drill Press and a Mini Lathe.
And finally add 3 axis CNC Laser

So better start your savings immediately

Seriously – if your material is not harder than Aluminum,
you’ll get a very long way with a 3 axis flatbed CNC, Index wheel and a Drill Press.

Thank you for the nice nick name.
I think it is better to buy 5 axis CNC. It is more precise with 5 axis.

Re: 3 or 4 or 5 axis CNC machine ?

    Hi Qwseyvnd

Well, I don’t believe the precision has anything to do with the number of axis,
Precision and cost are much related though. I think I can build a 5 axis CNC for less than
$1000 but the "output" would be real crap

What I tried to tell you about the nick name is simply to start signing your posts as I prefer to “talk” to real names…

Re: 3 or 4 or 5 axis CNC machine ?

I have been machining sim parts for four years on my CNC and everything can be done on a 4 axis machine. The only times I have actually used the fourth axis was for engraving throttle knobs and machining flutes on custom switch knobs. A good tip - make sure your rotary fourth axis can be tilted, I use a locking vice with it's own protractor. Very hand for cutting flutes on tapered knobs etc. I can't see any value in a 5th axis (horizontal rotary table).

Re: 3 or 4 or 5 axis CNC machine ?

Germany have many hobby builders were make cnc and have many place were buy cnc router main board set cheap, i orden there some board and make 3 axis cnc my 2 cnc machine, first i made own brinted circuid board, but better buy board ready to use, come cheapen than make all itself.
need only connect stepper motors to board and power and BIG condensators. each axis.
i on remember what name board i orden year 2006 at germany but have same today too, many hobbyist use thats, you must be google cnc machine and self building kits.
my cnc cost secon hand motors and frame parts about 300 euro. board about under 100 € and all other parts i found at junkyard.
can make wood and plastic good, but if need metal cnc router, need lot better heavy strong main frame and thats not cheap, better made metall cnc old mill machine.

You said to make self building CNC; it is easy to do wrong with small details. It is better to buy a certificated ready set.
