Re: 7 segment led displays and my Radio Box

    Hi trakon,
I had two 10 uF electrolytic capacitors on hand, so I connected them in parallel b/w +5V and ground, close to the supply, like you suggested, and the displays worked for 2 hours without any powering down, but then, sadly, the last unit powered down, followed by the others after a few more minutes. Will keep trying.

How long is the wiring between the displays? SPI is supposed to have all the wiring on a PCB, it's not intended to run it via wires through a system. I would not use a lenght of more than 25cm from the source to the last display.

    tomahawk66,

Have you tried a different USB port yet?
And/or have you tried powering the Arduino from the separate power supply?
You can wire it in the VIN pin?

When I first made my Radio and was taking it around showing it to people, I used a laptop.
One of my laptop USB ports went "bad". The connection or the power bus was intermittent and would cause the lower displays to fall off. Also, If the arduino doesn't have enough power, they become unstable and can't execute the code properly.
When I switched USB ports it worked fine after that.

    Hi Fess_ter, Delphi and trakon,
Thank you for your inputs.....I have taken all your points on board.....however, I was able to eliminate them as the cause of my present problem. After many hours of testing, the most stable configuration that has emerged is the last one proposed by trakon, with additional capacitance as he suggested, and I am going along with it. The LED's do occasionally power down after extended periods, but then, re-starting them is easily accomplished by re-starting Link2fs.
    Thank you!
    Chakko.

PS: I've now successfully cascaded 5 modules with this arrangement, for the level-D B767

    Hi trakon,
I understand from your post that you have attached more than one 1602 LCD (on I2C bus?) to your Arduino. How many are possible, and would you be able to elaborate on how you did this, i.e. the connections involved? I have begun experimenting with 1602 LCDs (with I2C backpacks) myself, but have only figured out how to attach 2 such units to my Mega. Would like to attach more.
    Thanks,
    Chakko.

EDIT: okay I figured this one out: it requires creating SDA and SCL lines from the board, and then connecting the SDA and SCL pins of the LCD backpacks to these lines in parallel:

    Hi Fess,

Congratulations !! Great project and great tutorial as well.
My friend, I'm new here and new with Arduino as well and I'll try to do a radio stack to my son. Please, could you share the electric schematic with me ?
I found the 8xseven segment display at dx.com (http://www.dx.com/p/diy8-x-seven-seg...3#.VQ3NxO7F8tc). May I use this one ?

    Thank you so much

    m_mota,
    It should work.
However, the displays are soldered to the board so you won't be able to position them away from the pcb, and that board does not have the ability to chain multiple displays together.

Great and thank you so much for your fast response,
I found, in Brazil, a model very similar with that one (http://produto.mercadolivre.com.br/M...M#questionText)

What about the electric schematic ? Please, could you share with me ?

Thank you so much Fess and Matti V

Re: 7 segment led displays and my Radio Box

    m_mota,
There was an error in my remarks on the pins that the Max7219 connect to.
    Pins 10, 11, and 12.
I corrected the remarks and re-uploaded the zip.
You can get it from my first post at the top of this thread.
