Controlling Air Core instruments with OC cards
Hello,
we are converting a Caravelle cockpit into a fixed base simulator. The cockpit we own has been partially converted into a simulator in the early 1980s. Unfortunately the project was abandoned due to costs. Over 20 instruments have been converted to Air Core Instruments and still work perfectly...but: how to control them in SIOC?
Any ideas?
Many thanks

Re: Controlling Air Core instruments with OC cards
You can use a USB DCMotors Card, and a few resistors to limit current, to control 6 air cores.
After that, its simple to program in SIOC.

Hi,
You didnt say if your Aircored movements have driver cct included. Have a look at this site and if you need further
help just ask.

Re: Controlling Air Core instruments with OC cards
Many thanks for your replys, guys. Should have posted in the software forum but it is a bit of both actually.
The air core motors don't have drivers included, they are very old too.
BTW, hyamesto: Is it possible to control air motors in the milli Volts? Most air cores operate between 0 and 411mV. Can DC cards handle this (with resistors obvisously).

Re: Controlling Air Core instruments with OC cards
This is a very fascinating project. This might help you:
Baufortschritt meines twin engine cockpit - Home Cockpit - Das Forum für "Bastler" - FlightX.de - das größte deutschsprachige Forum der Flugsimulation
I found this discussion some months ago and they´re talking about converting real instruments into simulated instruments. They also habe some ideas for a possible soic code to controle the aircore instruments with an oc dc motor card. The site is in german, but I think you will understand due to your location.
best regards

Re: Controlling Air Core instruments with OC cards
Nils:
The USB DCMotors can drive 6 dc motors up 1 amper and 36 volts, with PWM (pulse-width modulation).
Read the USB DC Motors Card manual:
http://www.opencockpits.com/index.php/es/descargas?task=callelement&format=raw&item_id=209&element=f85c494b-2b32-4109-b8c1-083cca2b7db6&method=download&args[0]=a0c3abe4cae701462dc07b03f3dff60f
If you use 5 volts to feed the card, and use a resistor, you don´t need any driver to control the air core, and you can control the turn direction. (useful with 360 degrees air core movement, using two outputs of the card).
Let me know your progress.
Regards.

Re: Controlling Air Core instruments with OC cards
Hello,
thanks for your inputs and sorry for my late reply. Have been busy with the actual restoration of the cockpit. Finally tried both the USB Servo card and DC with resitors on the air core motors. While the needles of the air core actually moved the way they should they start to jitter/tremble when the power is increased to full deflection. any idea what the reeason for this might be?
Many thanks
Nils

Re: Controlling Air Core instruments with OC cards
Nils:
The jitter/tremble depends of the the instrument´s ballistic. Try to put an electrolitic condenser in parallel to the aircore, to soften the reading.
What value?
It´s depends of the aircore.
Try 10mf at first, and rise or low the value, to see how change the response.
Maybe another person can help you better than I.
Regards.
Horacio.

Look this:
