Link2fs_FSX_inOut. Anything about it. Idea's bugs etc

Link2fs_FSX_inOut is a program for interfacing the Arduino cards (and others) to MS FSX.
What it does is extract data from FSX and sends that data to the Arduino ,,, there you can manipulate the data for your own needs.
The other half of the program receives data from the card and injects the required keystrokes directly into FSX (Just as though you had pressed a key, or a group of keys, on your keyboard).

The format of the data both ways would also suit other types of cards that can be configured to receive and transmit the same (very simple) format. I have made provisions for this.

This program ONLY works with FSX. (Not Fs2004)

Well I finally got there,, a few hick-ups on the way but she's all done and ready for testing.

First Tab ,, The "FSXout" stuff.

Second Tab ,, more "FSXout" stuff.

Third Tab ,,, The original "Keys" program.

And the test configuration working. (Same picture as before )

You can download the FSX_inOut_v1e here ,,,

    This link updated 9-09-2011.
My Website page updated as well. (Hit refresh maybe ??)

    See http://www.jimspage.co.nz/fsx_inout.htm

This hasn't really had much testing so there will be bugs but we'll sort them out quickly hopefully.
As I stand at the moment ,, I'll consolidate this release and get it bugs free before moving on and inserting more tabs for other options. (any needs?? ,, wants?? ,, idea's ??,,, improvements ??)

Good luck Guys ,,,, Have fun and report any bugs / idea's in this thread please.
    Jim

Re: Link2fs_FSX_inOut. Anything about it. Idea's bugs etc

    Dear Uncle Jim(!),

Thanks for all your efforts. Just to update on my progress using Link2fs and to make a feature request, if I may.

I'm working on the autopilot selectors for a PMDG aircraft. PMDG do their own brew of autopilot, therefore the AP Altitude Set, AP Heading Set data is not populated thru Simconnect, and in your program.
It's no problem for me to work around this and make all the calculations myself in arduino code, but to work out current MACH speed I would need the Outside Air Temperature.

Is it possible for you to include Outside Air Temperature, or even better current MACH directly if you can, in the data collected from FSX?

Hope you don't it rude if I request this or other items as my project go along. You''ve already saved me hours of head-scratching as it is!

    Thanks, as always,
    Mark

Hi Mark,,, Yes no worries,, I'll include "CURRENT MACH" in the next release.
Thats available so shouldnt be too much of a hassle to get it out.
It shouldnt be too long as I want to install a few improvements in the "inOut" program.

Interesting mission you've got going there Mark ,, when you get sorted how about giving us a run-down on the build ???
Other peoples projects are always of interest as thats where we get idea's and hints etc from.
At this stage even I have got a few hints from the other guys ,,, well ,,, in actual fact I'm a newbie too. !!!!

Thanks Mark ,, keep at it ,,, Uncle Jim

    Hi Jim,

That's great - I knew you could make it happen.
Yes, of course I'd love to do a write-up of the steps in my Flight Control Panel project. Alas, everything only 'half-works' at the moment!

In the meantime, two good sources I can recommend are:
    1. Using Dual-Digit 7 segment displays with Arduino. The blog of Natalia Fargasch Norman.
    2. A more complete way of using Rotary Encoders with Arduino., from the Arduino Playground.. Comes with code libraries.

Jim, I await to see what more goodies you can offer us geeks!

    All the best, mate.
    Mark

Re: Link2fs_FSX_inOut. Anything about it. Idea's bugs etc

Thanks for the links Mark ,,, interesting stuff in both of them and as for rotary encoders and/or rotary switchs ,, when I get "settled" again,, and if some-one else hasnt started one ,, I intend to open a seperate thread and we can all thrash this out once and for all???. Its a rather challenging feild.

Let me know if the "current mach" info is holding you up ,, I can rush it thru if need be.

Any-else need anything this time around ??????????

Also on the list of what the user will see is ,,,
On opening my program it connects to simconnect automatically,,
Then,, if the above happens OK ,,,,
It then connects to the com. port,,
If thats also OK then it minimises to the taskbar.
All the above are seperate options the user can tick if he wants them to happen or not.

Probably about 2 or three weeks.

    Anyway ,,,,
Keep at it Mark ,,, Jim

    Hi Jim,

No, I'm in no position to ask you to get on with it!

Seriously, no rush at my end... I still have to bodge together a convincing push-pull rotary encoder for the speed selector.

All sounds good about the update. As long as there are still those Com Connect and disconnect buttons as I rapidly upload and re-upload code to the Arduino, accompanied with a swear word or two!

    Cheers!

Yeeees ,, another guy like me ,,, I too use those buttons a lot so they are still there Mark ,, I just made a wee bit of room above the "save" button to allow the automatic options to be ticked or unticked.
I'm doing long hours at work so HOPEFULLY after Friday things are back to normal !!! (Yes, I know ,, I'm retired ,,, I cant figure it out iether !!! )

Keep at it Mark ,,, Jim

Re: Link2fs_FSX_inOut. Anything about it. Idea's bugs etc

    Hello again Jim!

Not sure if this is the right thread to put this - there is a bit of overlap!
It's a feature request, I guess, so here is as good a place as any...

Just messing around with a 16x2 lcd for VHF1 frequency display. I noticed that the format taken from FSX is xxx,xx. On the MD11 the display is xxx.xxx. Of course I am able to substitute the comma for a point and add a zero for the third decimal place. However, this is wrong as 5 and 0 should be able to be displayed - xxx.xx5 & xxx.xx0

In this example the actual frequency is 133.275 but FSX_InOut only knows about 133,27.

Is it possible to get the third decimal Com digit from FSX? It's been so long since I did a flight, I don't know if the third decimal place is ever used in a frequency!

Am I missing an easy work-around?!
    Help Uncle Jim!

    Ta!
    Puzzled Mark

Re: Link2fs_FSX_inOut. Anything about it. Idea's bugs etc

All fixed Mark ,,, I had a senior moment somewhere ,, I extract the 6 digits, and quite on purpose display and send to the com.port only the 5. !!!!
Next release will have the 6 digits.

I think from memory,, it only pertains to the Com radios and not to the Nav radios ??? Can you let me know please ... I dont have that add-on your talking about.

Now the comma instead of the decimal point ,,,, its probably due to your windows settings (country) as the program actually does produce a dot in the program but as its all in text format, windows is converting it to a comma.

Hope that works Mark ,, Let me know ,,, cheers ,,, Uncle Jim
