SPLITTING ATC FROM GENERAL SOUNDS.

Hi Folks.

I am trying to seperate ATC audio from other sounds (engines etc) and have ATC on headphones, and the rest through an amp to speakers. Given that ALL audio comes from the same place (FS), I can't see how to do this? Because the inbuilt ATC is very weak in volume, even with the slider up to full, it can't even be heard with the engine slider almost off - so adjustments available here are of no use! If I could substantially beef up the ATC sound so that it could compete more successfully with other sounds, this might be acceptable - but running with no engine sounds so that I can hear the faint ATC instructions, is of no use at all!
It has been suggested that I have 2 sound cards but I don't even know if this is technically possible and any way how would I seperate ATC audio from the rest?
Can a sound card signal carrying ALL audio, be split into ATC and other sounds - perhaps using the left and right (stereo) card outputs?

I am sure that other people have wanted this facility, and I am hoping that someone will have achieved this.

I do this by having a USB sound emulator as well as a sound card in a PCI slot. The sound card runs the ATC to headphones and the USB watsit runs the environmental sounds to speakers.
Then in the sound settings in FSX you can tell the sim which one to use for which sounds.

Only cost a couple of quid from Hong Kong. Try Googlling usb sound.

I am not sure whether this works in FS9 as well?
I have Pm sounds running on a 2nd computer and that connects to my surround system, while the ATC from FS9 is going to my headphones and by way of a splitter to the overhead speakers.

i wanted to kno about this also , sooo its nt jus me having that prob bob! lol i have to have engine sound on low to hear atc on vatsim or fsmp

I have never used a second computer. Do I have to run FS 2004 on this machine as well? Not sure how the sounds only idea works? What would the cabling runs be like (from/to)?
Den's idea for a USB sound emulator also sound s interesting? I am replying to his post to find out more.

Thanks for the post. I am running on FS2004. Do you think that your idea would work with this? Would my onboard sound card be usable along with the sound emulator? I did not know that ATC and environmental sounds could be split as they are being generated from one source? I am having a look for "sound settings" on my system to see if the 'split' is possible. Of course, if necessary, I will install a PCI sound card, and an 'emulator'.

My remarks apply to FS 2004 only.
As far as I remember in FS2004, the inbuilt default ATC cannot be separated from engine/ambient sounds.
However, ATC via Vatsim most certainly can be separated and directed to headphones. You can use either a 2nd sound card or simpler still a USB sound adapter (these work just like a second sound card). They cost about £1 - £2 on ebay as previously mentioned. Vatsim then plays in your headphones and all other flightsim sounds via your speakers. There is no need for a second computer in this set up.
I have no experience of FSX in this matter.

i dnt kno much about net working at the moment but there are threads here that can point u in the right direction.. way it works they want u to research first then post but it takes alot of time lol but im pretty sure u need fs on both..ill do a bit more research then ill get back with my findings

Onboard sound should work with the emulator as the pc will see them separately, but looking at the new posts it seems it wont work in FS2004. I know in fsx it works but that's not a lot of use for thought!

Some work arround can be still done by using equalizer , connected before some separate cheap little amp for the ATC headphones or speaker
Kill the low frequency and lift high--that will reduce the engines sound and gain the ATC
I did that in past with good results
No such probs , running SB or Radar contact on networked pc , of course
