ATI 6870 3 monitor setup with mini displayport?

Hey guys. I've got my new computer all set up and it's smokin'. I'm running the ATI 6870 card.

This card has two DVI, 1 HDMI, and 2 mini displayport's on the back. On previous ATI cards you had to get the diplayport DVI ($100+) unit to hook up three monitors (2 on DVI and one on displayport). That unit doesn't apply to mine, so what do I need? Will a mini displayport DVI unit work? And does it have to be active or will passive do?

The information out there is mixed and unclear...especially for the 6870, there doesn't seem to be anything at all in regards to this. Thanks in advance to those of you who can shed some light.

Re: ATI 6870 3 monitor setup with mini displayport?

    Hi,

I have the 5850 in my setup. I use a passive DP to VGA adapter. I use 1280*1024 an that works well.
These passive adapters are also available as mini DP to vga.
If your resolution is not too high, it should work with a passive adapter.
btw, i use 3 monitors, one on the mentioned adapter, one dvi one on hdmi to dvi adapter.

My adapter was bought in holland, branded startech. this company makes both DP and Mini DP versions.
Not too expensive at 30 eur.

If i'm not mistaking, the 68xx series is rather new, correct?

I hope my info helped a bit.

Hi Navajo31. Yes, the 6800 series is new. I've done a ton of research on it so far as well as experimented with different mini dp adapters. None of the ones I've tried have worked and I can only assume they are passive as it doesn't say on the packaging nor can I find anything when I try to look them up online.

The thing that happens with all of them is when you plug in the mini dp the other two monitor go black and the one only works. When you unplug it, the other two back online and the one plugged into the mini dp goes black. So, I've gone to amd's site where they list certified active adapters and I've ordered one. I'll post the results when I get it near the end of the month.

Too bad the passive stuff does not work.
I've read some things about screens doing funny stuff, and switching the monitor on and off, made them work again.

Hopefully your certified adapters will work!

    Cheers

Re: ATI 6870 3 monitor setup with mini displayport?

Another eyefinity user here (with 3x LG 47" TFT LCD and FSX)

Im with a 5870, and a sapphire Display port to DVI.

Very much useless info out there about active or not active, certified or not, etc...

I have no info or experience with the 68XX series, but I just like to share my info here.

Not all the active DP to DVI adapters are powered via USB (I have the saphire active adapter and it have not any power for any source).
Non-active adapters can show images on the three displays, until you active the eyefinity mode.
There are many certified by ATI adapters that are non-active.

No need to buy an adaptor to 2x1 eyefinity setup, just for 3x1 or 3x2 in the eyefinity6 series. The sapphire adapter its cheap (around 27€) and works just fine!

I am having a problem with bezel compensation in FSX using 3X1 monitor setup. In windows stretched mode the bezel compensation is perfect, but in full screen it is way off. Does anyone have suggestions for this?

You need to select into FSX the compensated resolution, this is the total resolution of your monitors plus the pixels "behind the bezels" you should found it in the list of available resolutions into FSX.

If you have already selected this resolution I have no idea!

Thank you very very much! It works perfect now. I have 3 lcd 24" Dell 2408 monitors with average framerate of 35 flying the F-18 with hi display parameters, could be happier. The bezel comp now works perfectly aligned after your grat suggestion.
