Introduced in 2009, the Arduino Duemilanove is just 1 in a series of a microcontroller boards produced by Arduino. These cards take inputs from a variety of switches or sensors, and can control a variety of lights, motors, and other physical outputs.

Arduino projects can be stand-alone, or they can communicate with software running on your computer (e.g. Flash, Processing, MaxMSP.) The boards can be assembled by hand or purchased preassembled and the open-source IDE can be downloaded for free.

Best of all, these cards are inexpensive and widely available. For the price, you cannot pass up the opportunity to review Arduino's offering.
