Re: Fastest card for Fs : new EVGA GTX285 FTW Limited Edition !

As a retired EVGA forum mod I say interesting card, but too late in the 200-series timeline to be that relevant. My suggestion would be to only purchase this if you can't wait for the 300-series release in a few months. I find the GTX260 and GTX275 a lot more relevant to my pocketbook than anything GTX285. For the price/performance I went Tri-260. You can get 260's for around $130-160 now if you dig around for them. There simply isn't enough performanace margin between the 260 and 285 to justify the price tag.

Before the EVGA GTX285 FTW I had a XFX 260 Black Edition.
    I also tried a EVGA GTX275 2Gb.
The difference with the 260 was a whopping 25% framerates and with the 275 about 8%.

The 275 is costing a bit more than I ask for the 285 and the 260 cannot be compared at all.

I also use 3 26" monitors in 3840x1024 with a TH2go and the framerate of the 260 dropped down with the max settings I use.

Price/performance is this 285 an excellent choice.

The 260 can ofcourse be compared performance/$$$. I bought my GTX260's for $140 each. You can OC them to 275 performanance easily. You're posing the arguement to someone who knows EVGA's hardware and has done customer service for them via their forums for years.

The only thing of contention is memory size and how that relates to performance in FSX. 896 vs 1024MB vs 1792MB vs 2048MB. The GPUs themselves are way too close together in performance when OCing for that part of the equasion to matter. Only thing that should be debated is memory size.

When you're talking about 25% performance hit for the 896MB memory configuration vs the 2048MB and comparing the $160 price tag to the $460 that math is apparent for $$$/performance. That performance gap can be marginalized with some OC tweaks.

Some people have different motivations for thier purchase decisions. You look to be no compromise best single core, while mine is best perforance/$$$. Both reasoning have thier merits, but it makes sense to compare one to the other for sake of showing just how little is different between the 2 cards. They all use the same silicon, only the memory size is different.

Re: Fastest card for Fs : new EVGA GTX285 FTW Limited Edition !

I think you are wrong when you say that an overclocked GTX260 will perform like a GTX275.

Myself I first also thought that an overclocked GTX260 would perform like a GTX275.
Therefore I bought a XFX GTX260 Black Edition.
    The moment I tried the eVGA GTX275 2Gb I got 25% more framerates !

NickN , the Fs guru, explained to me why a GTX275 will always perform better than an overclocked GTX260.

And to make it also clear for others just look at the attchement. Nick sent it to me.

    His own words "
Please look at the differences here between the 260 and the 275 on the specified ratings as shown above.. you GET what you pay for if you know how to use it.
You will see why the single “defined as” 275 is running faster than the 260.
Look at what it takes in CLOCKING for a 260 to hit that 275 for equal spec core/memory speed.. but there is MORE to a card than core/memory spec"

Shortly said : frequencies alone does not make a cards performance

Re: Fastest card for Fs : new EVGA GTX285 FTW Limited Edition !

Seriously, most of it is the memory footprint. They are the same GPU silicon, just binned differently. You don't have to take my word for it, but there isn't anything really magical about the difference between the cards other than the memory size. GTX260 are only guaranteed to do X speed, but depending on the luck of the draw you can get a card that performs just as good as any GTX275 of same memory size. Guess I got a good luck of the draw and you got bad. Mileage always varies when talking non-stock settings. Which goes to another point, some people like to tweak and OC others don't. I think that is another difference in our way of looking at things.

BTW, strictly speaking of shaders OC, the GTX260 has good OC overhead on shaders. I used to run a Folding at Home server farm with 9600GSO and GTX260s populating it. The shader OC on most cards are set way more conservatively than is required for stability.
