Exclamation AVSIM site has been hacked and is down

Breaking news: FYI... both of AVSIM's servers apparently have been hacked last night (May 12) and they are completely "offline" for an indefinate period. There are rumors (supposedly a statement by Tom Allensworth) that they lost all of their backups also.

    best,

Again? They had been down for over a week and just got back up. Server issues from DOS (denial of service) attacks. What a bummer!

No Brian, this was a hack of catastrophic proportions. There's lots of speculations as to how it happened (by whom) but only time till tell. I hope the person responsible sees a court room.

OUCH!!!!! I feel for them, not good. I hope they find a way of recovering.

That's why we don't do backups to our servers.

    Unhappy Surely they did backups

    "Post subject: Backups
Post Posted: Wed May 13, 2009 8:42 am

Some have asked whether or not we had back ups. Yes, we dutifully backed up our servers every day. Unfortunately, we backed up the servers BETWEEN servers. That is, GREEN, our library server, would be backed up to PURPLE, our WEB/Forum server. That way, if one or the other failed, we would have a back up on the remaining active server. The hacker took out both servers, destroying our ability to use one or the other back up to remedy the situation.

Surely they did off site backups.

Why would anyone keep their own servers anyway when you could
let GoDaddy get all the ulcers and from the prices I see virtually
    costing nothing.

I would hazard a guess that AVSIM is in big trouble

I also cannot believe that they didnt keep off site backups!

Backup between two servers isn't really a backup. If both servers are in the same physical location it makes even more sense to do off site backups.

All those years of work by so many developers is probably now lost, most of it forever. Hopefully the flightsim.com library contains stuff but I havent visited that in years!

Access to both systems like this to me sounds like a disgruntled admin employee who knew where to go. Im no expert in hacking but I bet a regular hacker who gained access to one server wouldn't immediately know about the second one.

This is too bad! And before you ask.. We DO backups they are just not kept on the server. It takes a lot of time to get back up from something like this even with a backup, right Dee??!! Now without a backup I think IF they get back up it will not be the site it once was. All the years I have been doing this, I still find it hard to think and believe that people do this on purpose...... Sad.......

It appears although the flightsim community finds this important news, it also warrants being on the BBC News Technology front page too!

I find it hard to believe this in its entirety. The #1 flight simulation site is "hacked" and destroyed right after a major upgrade to the file library. While it most likely looked very disimal, there are many vendors out there that do this type of data recovery. I too keep off site backups of the sites I own. I wish them the best and a speedy recovery as they are already greatly missed in the flight sim community.
