The Windows 7 Release Candidate is here!

I have just recieved the following information from Microsoft

The Windows 7 Release Candidate is here!

"If you have a TechNet Plus subscription you can download the Windows 7 RC right now from our subscriber site. The rest of us have a few more days to wait - until 5 May. Bookmark the Windows TechCentre so you see the notification as soon as it is available! In the meantime why not review some of the Windows 7 resources?

You may have also seen the news about Windows XP Mode. It's a way to run your older applications through a virtual XP environment on Windows 7. I think it's going to be a great addition, and I can't wait to test it out. "

I guess I shall be as interested as the author in testing as well!

    Bill.

    Hi Everyone

Yes RC1 is looking very good but watch out for trap

You can not easily upgrade from Windows 7 Beta to RC1 and instead you need to perform a new install.

Also you will not be able to easily upgrade from Windows 7 RC1 to the Gold version.

You can upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 RC1 or Gold without any problems.

There are some ways around this but by default it is not possible.

    I hope this helps

    Kind regards

Yeah, that's too bad... but kinda expected that. I knew what eventually I would loose everything, just didn't think it would be this soon... LOL. That's why I still have WinXP on a 2nd drive

I love Win 7. RC 1 was easy to install

Well, Microsoft don't want you to, but they published the work-around already "if you just must" (just google it -- it's been published in PCPro Magazine in the UK too, already).

I'm installing it as a Vista update on my Vista notebook, so I'm complying with MS's wishes at least the once, but I'm doing the Win7 update fiddle on my two FS Sim PCs -- they are now set up so well I'm certainly not going to start again.

And the method is very easy. There's just a parameter to change in a text file -- of course, you have to make the DVD first, then copy the whole thing to your hard disk, modify the parameter, and install from there (or burn another DVD).

Also you will not be able to easily upgrade from Windows 7 RC1 to the Gold version.
I certainly hope the same should apply then too.

I'm rather concerned that you cannot upgrade direct from XP without going via Vista. I really don't want the Vista hassle on my current XP PCs.

    Regards
    Pete
