    FS Software Future?

What is the effect of the layoffs at Microsoft of the entire Flight Simulator development team? I am in the middle of building instruments for my sim and was planning on using FS9 or FSX, have both. Should I consider other options before investing a lot of time and energy in developing the communicating software links to my instruments. I am roughly following the model designed by Mike Powell; excellent groundwork for a solid starting point in REALISTIC cockpit sim building.

Just because MS isn"t going to develop a new FS (FS11?) in the near future doesn't mean that you can't use all the 3rd party software out there for use with FS9 or FSX to do what you want.

    Hi William,

I can assure you that this hobby will not die without Microsoft. Many of the hardware and software developers will need to evolve to whatever is next on the horizon.

We will get through this, and I assure you that if you continue using fs9 or fsx your simulator will still rock this world.

    Hang in there,

    Trev

    110% Agree-

It had been over a week since I had flown my sim until yesterday and I was totally blown away for some reason by how good my FS9 based LJ45 sim looked. I think the break was good- it reminded me of just how awesome our sims are, even if they were to remain based on FS9 or FSX for quite a period of time to come.

    Hi John,

The "I'm Michelle" ad is an ad for It's Your Plane, an add-on for Microsoft Flight Simulator - Michelle is the name of the virtual co-pilot

I'm still trying to understand why some are still in an uproar about the possibility of another FS edition not being released.

What could that possibly have to do with what you are running now for sim software?

What if they did release another addition and changed the engine or the coding where nothing you now have worked with it? That would be worse than no release at all.

We all should be thankful for what we have in the here and now and stop worrying about what may never come to pass.

This hobby isn't going away as long as FS9 and FSX are still working in the sim.

See the thread below for info on the likely new direction of FS......which looks to be a change in direction that is a logical following of the "gamey" aspects of FSX... like the change to Gamespy and the emphasis on graphics and the missions:

    Smile Investing Time & Effort

Thanks for all of the comments. I agree that Fs represents a very solid platform of cockpit simming. My comment was more motivated by the tremendous amount of time an effort each of us put into developing our sims on a platform that may eventually have now "factory" support. Suppose I develop a neat system based on FS and then want to market it. Does that make sense in 2 or 3 years for a product that is not supported or growing, especially when other sim software packages are.

I am still moving ahead using FS because enough tools and expertise exists external to Microsoft. Of course, an "online" version remains to be seen but the thought of "pay per play" doesn't appeal to me.

    William
