    Another Great Addition!!!

The NAV heads from OC came today.

Well worth the money with only a few descrepancies.

    1. The edge of one of the faceplates was not painted allowing light bleed through. Easily fixed.

    2. Holes not big enough for Dusz fasteners. Also easily remedied.

    3. LED backlighting leads for the NAV engraving left too long and LED's stuck out in the area where the module sits on the Dusz rail. CAREFULLY fixed by removing the LED's, retrimming the leads and re-installing on the circuit card. This should not have left the building without being corrected.
Someone else may not have been able to repair it, or even want to attempt it if they could.

    4. Translation for installation needs work.

Now, for all of the above, they are still a bargain. You couldn't even buy one NAV head from the competitors for the price I paid for both. They function the same, they look the same, and they fit the same using standard Boeing rack width spacing.

    Why pay more?

The encoders are fast and precise, though lacking a bit of stiffness like on the Collins heads. Just something to get used to. The Collins heads also use a mechanical switch which is something to consider.

I'm very happy with my purchase. I hope they eventually produce a USB ADF head and a USB transponder. I'll be the first in line.

    Hi Michael,

Glad you received your radio heads. One quick question, does your "TEST" button have any functionality?, mine does not (COM and NAV). According to the Opencockpits manual it is used to test the digits ( 888.88 ), or am I wrong?
Thank you, just want to make sure.

    Regards,

    Pedro.

The radios work great. Now I need to figure out how to turn my ADF back on in the model.

Can't tune it. The dial starts to rotate from .100 Khz and when approaching .112 it goes right back to .100.

Now my ADF is useless and I have to have this working while flying in Europe.

I pushed it a few times out of curiosity and it didn't do anything on my heads either. ????

    Thanks Mike,

Seems like I will be e-mailing Opencockpits to see if this was added after we purchase them or they meant something else. When I first got them I did not care, but now I want to know if they are lacking this capability (is the manual wrong???). Anyway for the price I don't really care, but it is good info for future customers. Worst case an "INOP" label will do it, jeje..

    Take care,

    Pedro.

Who knows, I can't make heads or tails of the manual anyway. The translation is terrible.

I can read poorly translated German better than that.

    Funny,

By the way I have the same LED problem with one of my radios. Maybe the same guy put them together. Will be doing the same thing you did to fix it (did you have to take anything apart besides the LED?), hopefully I will not have any problems.

No, I changed the tip on the iron to a longer thinner tip. Didn't have to take anything apart. Just a 20 minute fix.

Just a PITA that I should have never had to do. I'm not complaining though. I just wanted potential buyers to be aware of what I received.

Here is some information I found on their forum about the TEST function.

    NAV:

    -shows VOR fail flag
-deviation bar biases out of view and then returns to centered position
-bearing pointer slews to 180 degrees.
    -DME displays:
    -DME fail flag
    -dashes
    -normal DME distance
With ILS frequency tuned and a course within 90 degrees of airplane heading:
-pointers display one dot up and one dot left
-pointers then display one dot low and one dot right
-pointers then return to normal display.
    -DME displays:
    -DME fail flag

    -normal DME distance

    Impossible to do in FSimulator.
