Trying to figure out what is the best way to interface the 59 digits I need controlled. It seems Opencockpits is the only major player who supports that many displays. Is this what most people are using?

Yes, I used 5 OC display boards wired to two mastercards for my pedestal. I only needed the second mastercard because I was a few digits short. The first mastercard also handles all the switches and led outputs on the pedestal

Same here.
OpenCockpits MasterCard and 3 DisplayCards.

They run COM1, NAV1, NAV2, ADF1, XPNDR.
(So COM2 and ADF2 are INOP).

Safe you self a lot of work and buy the PCB (Printed circut boards) for 7-segment displays.

I would recommend Wendy's site as well. The support is phenomenal.

For 1 Nav Radio of 10 digits :

1 Pokeys card 49 Euro
2 Display Drivers (8 digits each) 78.80 Euro
2 cable sets 14 Euro
2 x 5 digit display boards 31.12 Euro

Total per radio (10 digit display) 158.92 Euro - little over 200 CAD for 10 digits.

I'm guessing that to cover all the digits on the pedestal it would cost around $1200CAD.


Each Pokey you use would give you 49 input/output ports to use on other switches in your pedestal or overhead etc. after using the 6 ports needed for display drivers. Unfortunately 1 pokeys card can only drive 2 displays . I never looked into OC for these as I didn't want to worry about soic scripting.

If you are a user of Prosim it is very easy to configure. Takes all of 5 minutes. Wendy's support is great.

Ease of configuration and support mean a great deal to me. Is the reason for my recommendation. Not sure if this answers your question, but it equates to approximately 200 dollars per 10 digit display..so 60 digits - $1200 CAD. If you make the solder connections yourself and you buy in bulk, you can also save quite a few Euro.

I plan on using Pokeys cards for most of my build so for me I would be purchasing 3 or 4 of them anyways , so another factor I guess is how many switches, leds etc a person requires to finish their cockpit to determine if worthwhile to purchase extra input/output cards.
