My other hobby is machining so I have a fairly well equipped shop. I used a vertical bandsaw to cut the PVC pipe. You might want to look into buying a mitre box for you hand saw, there not all that expensive and for small parts it would ensure a straight cut.
Edit: if you buy PVC board you can score that with a carpet knife and a straight edge, it's easy to cut just make multiple passes and don't try and cut to deep on each pass. The first cut is the most important, the blade pretty much follows that line with each subsiquent pass.
