I've been searching all over for 7 segment displays. The question I have is there a noticeable difference between .3" and .36" digit 7 segment displays? If so, I'm trying to find black face white or blue digit .3" displays is like finding gold in my back yard, where .36" is a little easier to find. I know i can get them through opencockpits.com but spending 3 Euros per display especially converted to USD is a bit expensive. Anyone have a good distributor out there for .3" if there is a noticeable difference?

Thanks

I frequently use DigiKey for specialty items. The items sell for market value and it will save you the overseas shipping costs.

All DigiKey 7-segment asssortments (http://www.digikey.com/product-search/en/optoelectronics/display-modules-led-character-and-numeric/524324)

Blue 1-digit (http://www.digikey.com/scripts/dksearch/dksus.dll?pv67=1&pv37=3&FV=fff40008%2Cfff80024&mnonly=0&newproducts=0&ColumnSort=0&page=1&quantity=0&ptm=0&fid=0&pageSize=25)

White 1-digit (http://www.digikey.com/scripts/dksearch/dksus.dll?pv67=1&pv37=8&FV=fff40008%2Cfff80024&mnonly=0&newproducts=0&ColumnSort=0&page=1&quantity=0&ptm=0&fid=0&pageSize=25)

As for the size difference, it amounts to 2/16 of an inch. Normally, this is considered dismissible.

[edit]
If this is a replacement item on a pc-board, I'd be sure to check the specs for pinout measurements.

Have you looked at mouser.com?

Altso Tayda Electronis might have cheap-ish white .36 displays. However I am not sure how (or even if) they interface with the most common used display cards (like Open Cockpits). But give them a try taydaelectronics.com. I have used the shop a few times. Things arrive faster than your average ebay-seller.

I'll have to take a look. These sites never came up in my search. I'm not overly to worried about interfacing with Open Cockpits 7 segment adapter. I'll making my own to save a few bucks. I also found LC LED, which looks to be reasonable in price for .36". Thanks everyone for the info.

Before you start comparing prices just remember that Mouser.com sells high quality components and the price is there after.
Companies on ebay (And Tayda) sell cheap products. I am not directly saying that it is low quality. I most cases it suits cockpit-building needs just fine. But of course you get what you pay for - no more no less. :-)
(But just for the record I have nothing negative to say about Tayda Elec. and other alike vendors)

I bought my Kingbright 7-segment displays via Mouser (together with encoders and rotary switches). Shipped from Texas to Europe in 48 hours. Same product as OpenCockpits, but a bit cheaper.
EDIT: Actually the KingBright from Mouser is not the same as OpenCockpits sells, but the same as Hispapanels sels. OC is using a new/other unit now. It is a bit smaller and (As I understand) a bit brighter. But then again I focus on the yellow/amber displays.

Hello skipunk, BTW, nice name ;)

Why not call / email the company:
Innovative LED Lighting Solutions & LED Components - Forge Europa (http://www.forge-europa.co.uk/)
and ask for a quota. I'm afraid you have to ask for a huge amount
to get the cost down - that's what I believe OC have done.

I see that www.farnell.com (http://www.farnell.com/) or in US www.newark.com (http://www.newark.com/) have some of Forge Europa
components - the blue version (~$7), but not the white.
Maybe they are willing to distribute the white as well – very expensive though:(

And yes, LC-Led is great - I use the 0,36 size:
7 Segment White LED - Single 0.36 inch (9.14mm) Cathode LCS-3612TW1C (http://www.lc-led.com/View/itemNumber/424)
and as Peter, I buy from Mouser except a few good deals on Ebay, Aliexpress, Dealextreme.... ;-)

Nice to hear you plan for making your own Display-II board. I’ve done the same!!

Hi,

By searching google for the same issue I found this thread. For now lc-led is also the only company I found who offers white .36" displays. Mouser has none. Same with other suppliers I know. Well it's great solution, but I have one more tricky question: does anyone have experience with +/- signs on MCP v/s display (actually, minus is not a problem, but plus...:-?)

As I recall - on my OpenCockpits MCP - there is no plus-sign.
So it is either "-" = Down or " " = up

Exactly. But it seems, that real MCP has + sign. Mouser has some displays with +, but not in white :(

Hi,
Probably the real ones are made to order. Titan Opto will make to order but it will be at a price.
They probably are not common so not available off the shelf. You could try ordering a sample from them if you dont need many.
Les
P.S, If you want a + sign, get a sign cut and backlight it witha white LED.
