Headset Wiring

id like to be able to have a panel mounted set of jacks for a 2.5mm pc headset that when not plugged in sound comes out of the other speakers. Any Ideas?

A few thoughts come to mind:

1. Possible simple down and dirty method: Most newer pc's have such an isolating headphone jack built in and if your sim pc is dedicated then you could always open it up remove the jack and extend the cable into your sim.

2. Slightly better method without hacking into the pc cabinet: Many externally powered speaker systems also have a built in isolating headphone jack and several models (Cambridge Sound Works for example) have that jack on an extended cable with a volume control. You could likewise use that to bring it into the pit and mount it as needed.

3. You can take the output of your sound card and run it into the pit and wire it through a switching jack so that when not plugged in it routes to your powered speakers and when the headphones are jacked in the speakers are cut off. The jacks for this with the built in switch contacts are readily available at most electronic supply houses and some hobby shops for mono or stereo systems. You wire the left and right through to both speakers and headphones and then the common goes through the switch contacts such that plugging the headphones in opens the switch and removes the signal from the speakers. Not sure but depending on the output level from the sound card needed to drive the amp in the speakers you may need an attenuating resistor in the circuit for the headphones.

Things I have...

- Computer headset with volume and mute on mic on the wire that goes to your sound card.
- 2.5mm splitter. (Your computer speakers and earpiece connection)

- (2) 2 2.5mm extension cords. (Long enough to reach between your computer and MIP comfortably)

With the vol/mute on your headset you control the output to your headset this is important when you split the sound with the splitter. You only have so much output from your sound card so if you have your headset volume up you will be taking half the sound. No volume on your headset and you have full sound for your speakers when you want to use them.

Connect the splitter to your sound card OUT port. Then plug your speakers and the one extension to your mip then the other extension between the MIC port on your soundcard to the mip.

You can leave your headset plugged in volume off or unplug your headset and your speakers will still have sound. As you turn the volume up on your headset that sound will be split to 50/50 with full volume on your headset.

Pretty simple really. Just remember to turn the volume down or unplug headphones when not using them...
