Hamburg International has become a new customer for the Airbus A319 with an order for 14 aircraft of the type, plus another six on option. Ten of those aircraft will replace the airline's current fleet of previous-generation single-aisle aircraft. Airbus will deliver the aircraft configured in a comfortable single-class layout, seating up to 150 passengers. The contract, announced today by Hamburg International, had already been signed in December 2005.

Established in 1998, the Hamburg-based airline operates on behalf of renowned tour operators as well as charter flights and addressing other substantial niche markets like executive charters and corporate flight operations. The airline will operate ten of the A319s on its European charter routes as well as on dedicated international flights to Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

Hamburg International Managing Directors Norbert Grella, Klaus-A. Schlichtmann and Christoph von Saldern, said: "We are proudly looking forward to carrying the name of our home base Hamburg into the world on a modern fleet of Hamburg assembled Airbus aircraft. We believe that the renewal of our fleet with A319 aircraft will further improve the satisfaction of our customers in terms of comfort and flexibility to serve our niche markets."

Airbus President and Chief Executive Officer Gustav Humbert, said: "I am particularly delighted that Hamburg International, a well-reputed customer located in the same city as Airbus' biggest site in Germany, has selected the A319 for their future fleet. This is another example that underlines the A320 Family's position as the reference aircraft for charter and low-cost carriers worldwide. I am confident that the superb economics and excellent passenger appeal of our aircraft will help Hamburg International to strengthen its position as a leading specialised niche carrier."

The A319 is a member of Airbus' popular fly-by-wire single-aisle family, which also includes the A318, the A320 and A321 with passenger capacities ranging from 100 to 200 seats. Airbus’ A320 Family is the recognised technological leader in single-aisle aircraft, with advanced features such as fuel-saving wingtip fences, weight-saving composites and the reliability that comes from its modern design and ease of maintenance.

Consistently leading in independent passenger and operator surveys, its greater space and comfort, modern design and market-leading economics make it a firm favourite with passengers, airlines and financiers, a fact that is confirmed by the figures. Firm orders for the A320 Family stand at more than 4,200, more than 2,600 of which have been delivered to more than 190 customers and operators around the world.

Airbus is a leading aircraft manufacturer with the most modern and comprehensive family of airliners on the market. Headquartered in Toulouse, France, Airbus is an EADS joint Company with BAE Systems.
