Until very ecently I thought I was familiar with every electronic component ever made. From crystal radio detectors
made from coal, to the latest micros and FPGAs... but I recently saw a pot that is a cylinder with a shaft coming out one end, and three terminals! it looks like a tiny gas shock! It really caught me by surprise, as it is not really al
slide pot per se, but a totally different unit than I had ever seen! What a neat gizmo for us builders! Is anyone else (Mike P) familiar with these?

This is a "linear displacement sensor" used in automotive, motor-racing and similar industries e.g. http://www.pennyandgiles.com/Linear-Displacement-Sensor-pd-94,3,24,16.php
Basically, it's a linear pot with mechanical life of 10+ mln movements and great environmental protection.
It should cost about $100-$200 per piece if you are lucky. I have a few just in case world financial system comes to a total collapse.
