My 1tb seagate drive mysteriously crashed yesterday. In the process of trying to recover data from it, I discovered that Seagate 7200.11 drives have been having a problem for over a year with firmware that causes them to crash and not be recognized by the bios or Windows. They just "disappear" from your system.

Seagate has issued a firware update that fixes the problem if you catch it before it dies. I have never dreamed of checking for firmware updates for drives, but I suggest any of you with Seagate drives do so ASAP.

It sounds as if all of the data on my drive is intact, and Seagate will retrieve it for me for free if that is the problem, and flash the drive to the newest fw. Has caused me much pain and angst though, and I hope this post saves someone else the trouble.

Seagate is NOT being at all proactive and letting customers know there is a problem so they can fix their drives before they fail, so please check your stuff.

Yep, this is a long standing issue. Maxtor drives also have firmware issues. I ran into a plague of this on the EVGA forums about a year ago when I was a forum mod there.
