Hello to you all,

i will try my first steps in building a home cockpit. My desired cockpit will be a 737 NG. I will have limited space (2.5 meters x 2,5 meters) So my first question is: What is better, mounting 3 x 32´LCD Monitors with a Th2G direkt in front of the window frames (and have a DC9 view ;)) or is there enough room for a 3 beamer solution with Th2G. What about the quality regarding beamer or LCD monitors?

What are your suggestions? Looking really forward to your answers.

Happy Christmas from Germany

Lothar,

It's a personal preference, there is no right answer. I used to use a projector and changed to 3 x LCDs with the TH2GO as I was (literally!) sick of flying in the dark!

Others will swear by the immersion that projectors give.

I guess it just depends on your requirements and constraints. If you need to get your pit into a small space as mentioned, I would guess that the LCDs ay work better for you.

:)

Hi David,

thanks for your reply. You mentioned that you switched from a projector to 3 LCD. What was your experience regarding to do this - have you been disapointed or are you satisfied. Did you personally loose the feeling of immersion, or is this solution ok for you.

I´m asking because i was sitting in a pit with the projector solution and found it great. But due to constraints of limited space i will probably make the Th2Go solution with 3 LCD´s for my own cockpit.

Thanks for giving me a idea ;)

Best Regards

Lothar

My opinion in this is that the best display's are projection, you can do great things with this no borders and big visuals. The 3 biggest downsides to this is, heat from the projectors, you need a bit of space and also important the bulbs ... replacing them is each time a major cost. If you only have 1 projector that's not so bad, but when using 3 of them sooner or later ...
The LCD solution, is the one I will use now is a durable setup and very easy to switch on and off an no risk of bulbs. Downside here is the monitor frames except if you use a super big one ;-)
A few topics away is I think a very good solution, using 1 projector and bending software to create a curved image, but so far this allway's came with a price ...

Hi Marnix,

thanks for your answer. I was drawing some plans in the last few hours. Maybe there´s a way to realize my project even with beamers. What so you think about a projection field as follows:

"main space" direkt in front of the eyes: 1,2 meters x 1.0 meters, and mounted in an angle of 45 degree to the left and right 2 "side space" with 1,0 meters x 1,0 meters. This would fill the width from the room i have. So every side has it´s own beamer, driven with a Th2Go

Do you think this configuration will work and give me a satisfying illusion?

Many X-Mas Greetings

Lothar

To be honest, with these restrictions of space I would choose the LCD television option. Technically it is possible wat you suggest but if you go that way, make sure you have an airco at hand because the temp will rise !

It might be cheapest to go 3 fresnel lens and some smaller LCDs to achieve the same effect. Keep in mind that more expensive is not always the way to go. Fresnel lenses give you better field of depth than just using large LCDs. Your eyes focus at a deeper field of view with fresnel. :)

YouTube - TripleHead2Go + Lens + Track IR

My personal preference is projectors because I already have the hardware on hand.

Hello Lothar,

in my opinion the best solution for you will be, to have the three 32" views.

In my cockpit I use 5 32" screens for the views. They would fit exactly into your room. I have nearly the same room for the screens.
It is fantastic, to fly with the 32" screens.
Suggestion: start with three and after a while you can install 5. That is incredible great. You get even better views than in reality :D
I have seen more from the Grand Canyon in my simflight with the Bell than in reality a month ago with the same Bell type.

Happy landings

Hi all, this is my first post on this site. I have started building my 738 sim in a caravan as it will be totaly portable. I too have not enough room for projectors and will probably go with large screen tv's as they are cheaper than large monitors. Does anyone know of any particular makes that would fit very close together when stripped out of the casings?
Phil.

Hi Arry

Could you provide some more details on your 5 screens setup.... and maybe a couple of pictures. Is that a picture of your cockpit on your profile? ...... looks good. Thanks.

Henry

Hello Henry and Matt,

what you see on the little Avatar is my "cockpit".
It is not very specific, but just general, to allow me flying different airplanes.

For me the most imortant thing while flying are the views and - of course - good flight controls and a good throttle unit.

My setup:
three computers - 2x6850, 1x6600 - with 8800GTS and Triplehead2Go (server) and 8600GTS for the clients.
The server gives the view forward and the instruments on three panel monitors, the clients provide two view screens each.

So I have 5 views 32" each and four monitors for panels/moving map. One of the four 19" CRT monitors is connected to a fourth computer, who stands for a moving map - FSCommander with FSX or FSNavigator with FS9.

My Setup runs with FSX. FS9 is only left on the fourth computer for FSNavigator.

The computers are connected with wideview, to have the five views.
The AP is Aerosoft Australia, the flight controls Jetliner Precision Flight Controls, The throttle unit is from Austria "SimHARD" (fantastic) and a lot of moduls are from GoFlight.

I will try now to add pictures. As this is just my second post, you know, that I have not tried it in this forum before. So .....

No idea, how to do it. I don't have any URL. So I need help for placing pictures

Arry, thanks for the info :)

To post a pic, hit the Icon with the mountain and Sun in it. You'll have to provide a link to the pic. Another way, make sure you "Go Advanced," and you can attach a photo (Paper clip Icon). It will ask you to upload from your computer, follow the steps. When attached, the post will include a thumbnail that can be expanded.

Hope this helps :)
